CoinCorgi Tell your dog I said hi!

Looks like a monster recently passed it. Terminal toning. IMHO not even worth melt.

Too dark for me. When you look on eBay the reverse has a few blank circular dots that looks to me like a "liquid bubble" might have been used where as the obverse looks like leprosy or loss of melanin on the face. Jim

I wouldn't touch it. It may be MS66, but the obverse has zero eye appeal. Keep in mind that you're essentially paying for corrosion. No way is it worth what they are asking.

OP, I don't believe it's worth the money. It appears overgraded based on the hits I'm seeing (at least a point or two) to begin with. Probably an absolute luster bomb in hand but the reverse hues are too "iffy" for my tastes. People can't necessarily view toned Peace Dollars the same way as they would Morgan's etc... Most often, the color patterns will never resemble or approach the aesthetic appeal of the earlier dollars. You have to settle for and appreciate the uniqueness, especially w/ the more colorful examples, which are looked @ w/ far more scrutiny and skepticism. I admit to having paid multiples for toned Peace Dollars but would pass on this example, personally.

If the obverse toning was decently attractive, half as nice as the reverse even, yes.....but it's ghastly.

While it's said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder...and it is...have you ever seen a MONSTER that wasn't ugly...? To me, this coin is hideous...no way.

Not to me, but I don’t pay extra money for toners. There is a reason that the reverse is shown first. It’s artificially toned, but it looks nice. The obverse is ugly, and the whole thing might get worse as the chemicals work on it over time.

I would not get in involved with this thing at all.

Agreed. If the obverse weren't quite the horror show that it is, I might pay one-tenth what they're asking. Might.

It seems kind of uncool to use the term "monster" for someone who's plainly suffering from vitiligo.

Edit: @desertgem beat me to it.

Yes it was worth it to the buyer. Peace dollars are hard to find toned and if you’re doing a toned set or whatever you don’t get to be super picky about it like with Morgan’s. Also as with any toning pictures and lighting can drastically change how it actually looks. It’s incredibly difficult to judge color without seeing it in hand or at the very least a consistent picture source like a TrueView or auction house you’re familiar with.

My personal opinion is that that toning is ugly. Looks like coffee was spilled on it. LOL
Wonder if it happed before or after it was slabbed?

That is true due to the struck surfaces. Here is a microscopic view @100X

    comp100.JPG
The left is Morgan surface, right is the Peace surface. The higher vertical angle refracts the light far more than the flatter Peace surface. The one below is the Morgan at 400X .Wear the peaks down and toning is not naturally produced.

No, but then I don't care for rainbow toning.
    EXCEPTION:
Nickels, particularly Jeffersons, often show up with a light pastel toning that I find attractive.
