Again, I think we can credit that to the shadowing in the pics. Or at least that had me scratching my head. That is to say, in hand, this could well be every bit MS63, we just can't say on these pics.

 

No, surface preservation alone supports much more than 63. The pictures aren’t that bad. Everybody came in quite above 63. I grabbed up that coin at low 63 money, as that, to me, was a TPG fail.

 

@eddiespin One thing I agree with you on is the color. They goofed on the RB designation. I would think the coin is more golden brown than red brown. So, I would have graded it as 65 BN. The color is pretty, but I see far more golden brown—a pretty color, but RB? Was the grader drunk that day?

 

I've heard they sometimes tone/change color in the holder, although I have no idea how long that would take.

 

We've got some like that. That's why I had the name for this one, "Goldilocks." It's what I call ours.

On the RB, that's hardly literal, anymore. It just there's some original color, and BN, there's none. It's just a price thing. I think the RB on this coin is deserved. Crazy, to a degree, but then, the more original should probably price higher. So there we got it. It's how I make sense of these designations, anyway.

 

I really think TPGs as of recent are making things up as they go along. This coin seems quite undergraded. I have others that are “I can’t believe that this coin is 65.” The number and quantity of submission has definitely affected their accuracy, aside from market grading, and not favorably.

 

You have it in hand, just like PCGS did. I called it a 65, but conditioned that on the pics. Your vantage point is different from ours, it's on par with PCGS's. Go with your grade, if that's what you think, knowing, and I agree, they are, to put it more polite, inconsistent.

 

Sometimes spots can hurt the grade but I didn't see anything serious enough here to prevent at least my guess of a 64. Nice find for 63 money!

 

I agree. I am very happy with it. It was the date that my Great Aunt and Great Uncle emigrated from the Ukraine to New York. My Great Grandparents came in 1902.

 

The TPG's seem to always be tough on the 18. I don't exactly know why. I have an 18D that is the same way. 62RB IMO it is at least 1 or two grades low.
