    Sorry, never saw this coin as an AU, I was at 35 tops, the surfaces may play a big part in the grade.

    Sorry, not an AU coin. Far too much wear in the high spots, and obvious places. Flowers on the wreath show a fair amount of wear, as well as the Eagle’s wings. I see it more as a VF coin, with nice original surfaces. Not close to AU.

    again... I don't really disagree with the grade on this slab... However in comparison too darn near every 45 50 and 53 I've looked at it is a higher quality coin then those graded as such (in more current slabs) Most had MORE wear on the reverse then this coin as well as considerbly less detail on the obverse... Those are the coins that i feel are misgraded, but since the "value" nearly doubles going from 40-50 I think it worth the risk of submission... worst case senario I get it back as is and I'm out the grading fee. but I think it stands a very good chance of at least getting bumped to 45.

    Then maybe you should consider sending it in to CAC. ;

    So, for a flying eagle to qualify for AU it needs these wing tip feathers to be complete and the center “line” of the bow to be visible on the reverse. Your coin has neither. I graded it VF35 before seeing the result, but XF40 doesn’t bother me since it has good eye appeal and is generally well struck.

    I can live with 40 but not anything higher. It's just not there. I can't see gambling on a higher grade.

    Absolutely. To be above 40, it needs sharper devices. There is just too much wear on the classic circulation high points. The coin is very nice, but maxes out at EF for me.

    I'm at 35 as well. This is what a PCGS AU58 looks like

    Sorry but I'm at 35 also. I'm not seeing any detail in the oak leaf's to make 45 or 50. Still it can have a home in my collection. My advice, save your money on an attempted regrade.

    I was at vf to xf before I saw the slab. The grading looks right to me.

    I'm at 35 or 40 because of the wear on the breast and the right wing. Would love to see what it regrades at. Could be a case where market dictates grade.

    I think 40 is correct and maybe even slightly high! I also would not reholder the coin. The wreath has too much wear to get a higher grade. There is no luster to get it in an AU holder.
