The Queen looks so young back then. May I share a related trivia with you? That old wedding limerick (Something old, something new...) originally had a 5th ingredient, and it was a six pence. The original went like this: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a six pence in your shoe. But the last part has been mostly omitted now.
I do know there is something some brides put it in their shoe. I know I bought something at the time when my daughter got married. I will have to find the last that she used. Thank you.
A few years ago I was at a coin shop and I was buying a lot of British coins, so the guy there asked me if I'd be interested in sixpences. I said sure so he brings out this big bin of them. I buy coins both for my collection and to resell them, and I know that sixpences always sell so I decided to go big and asked him how much for all of them. We settled on a price of $60 for what ended up being almost 1,200 coins. Where I'm going with this is I've been selling them off slowly since then on eBay, and almost all of the sales are to women. I don't know for sure that they are all for weddings, but I've had many people send me a message saying that's what they were for. So many people still do follow this tradition.
Nice find. When my last order of 6 lbs of world coins came, they sent me a bonus of the 1943 six pence. Silver is silver, I'll take it.
Well after my whining yesterday lol, I found it. Like I found that Canadian one the other day. Post it so I can see. Hey I just got awarded “addicted “ lol
They'll sweeten these up some when they're doing an honest job, translated, trying to build a reputation. We've found that ordering bulk wheat cents consistently from the same dealer. These are the good ones, not out for a quick hustle. Anybody remember the Budgood bags? He was an honest dealer. Gave us our money's worth. Surprised us a little, to boot.
Wow - I enjoyed your account. I never even knew about the six pence thing until I read about it. I thought the poem ended with something blue. It can't be comfortable for a girl to walk around with that in her shoe though. LOL.
The traditional penny in the shoe for good luck in the marriage you'll find in many cultures. You will find Irish pennies on ebay for just that old traditional penny in the shoe. As I recall its something borrowed, something blue something old and something new. So traditional you would borrow something from a close friend , something old maybe a piece of jewelry from your mum or grand mother, something new could be any item the bride wishes, and for good luck a penny in the shoe.
