And the reveal is MS 63 star at NGC, MS 63 at PCGS, and it sold for slightly more in the NGC holder

There are enough hits/contact marks in the fields to call this a technical 63. With color bumps, I could see a 64 (or a 65 if someone was very lucky). I’m perfectly fine with the coin in the 63 holder.

As far as the pricing, it is a little unusual. I fully expected it to go for more in the PCGS holder but it brought one increment less (about $60). Maybe the coin was not as “fresh” or not everyone was bidding. I lost out on the coin the first time around (in the NGC holder) but made sure to bid more aggressively this time (and was happy to get it for slightly less).

Wow, shocked! Could have seen 64, but am surprised. The money is in the toning, so grade is less of a factor. I am rarely 3 grades off with Morgans, so kinda shocked that both TPGs saw it as BU, and not gem.

Yes the pictures are a bit optimistic but it’s surprising when this type of color doesn’t get an extra bump (as I’d fully expect this coin to be a 63 without toning). I am glad for the grade as it allowed me to pay a reasonable price. If this was a 65 or 66, it could easily be in the $5k-$10k range.

Why am I seemingly always late to these? That said, I was in at 64 in PCGS and 64+ in NGC. Incorrect on both. Pretty coin.

I didn't know you posted the grade but, I was going to go with MS 62 because there is a lot of chatter on both sides. So, I win.

Someone didn't go to the Ed Wood school of grading. :p

For those that don't know, that is when you come in after the reveal with the correct grade. :D

Actually, I didn't know the grade. I figured it was an MS 62 the first time I saw it. I couldn't believe some were going with MS 66. I only looked at the first 4 comments and was surprised at what I saw. That's when I decided to post a grade. When I went to the second page I saw the slab and wasn't surprised. Common problem when people go by the PCGS TRUE VIEW image. Those images are very deceptive. Don't ever buy a coin based on those images.

Yes, it takes a lot of experience to grade toners, as the toning can hide imperfections on the coin. Then again, when one gets to this level of toning, the money is in the color, rather than the grade. Of course, gem grade monster toning outsells BU toning, and buyers with the funds tend to want both. Also, in the case of this coin, one needs to ask themselves, did the coin get the star for color, from NGC? The star is huge in selling and buying NGC toned coins.
