libelous portions ? ... are you referring to the HA award. I can't believe ya'll have never heard of this award, and quite frankly find it laughable that you'd consider it libelous... sad really.. <bad taste, ok,, I guess, if you've never heard of it, but libelous,, haha... pretty sure that one would get you laughed out of any court in america>. Anyway, I've won it myself in a golf tournament years ago, and have it displayed center stage among various other trouphies..... Here, there are thousands of these out there being given away daily,, call your legal team,,, maybe a class action suit in it for you: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...fcf9e9f&itemid=380147649428&ff4=263602_263622
My concern, and I will restate it , is that no member of the forum should feel that they have to defend themselves on a thread that they did not even post. In Jest or not, it seemed you were itching for a P****** contest. There are many things that could be said on the forum that would never get to legal resolution, BUT that is no defense or reason for saying them. Every person, whether they have 5000 posts or 2 posts should be secure in posting a "guess" at a grade to try and develop their grading skills without being awarded a dubious award that might really limit their contributions and learning. Many of these are youngsters or foreigners who have no idea of golf jokes. If you want to announce the titles you are going to bless them with, that is fine. But I still do not feel that non-participants should be expected to play along unless they actually join in. Jim
We'll I can do a couple of things to try and smooth this out. 1 - Doug, please feel free to delete this thread if you feel it's too dis-tastefull, or at least please delete any reference to non-participant forum members in the thread. 2 - Jim, let me explain the snippet further,,, I can see how it came across wrong, but I wrote it and I'll stand by it..... First, I hold all of these forum memebers in the highest regard. I've purchased from some before, and will likely do so again... that's the best endorsement I can give anyone. Now, to the snippit,,,, if "I" were them, I would consider it best to sit in the dugout, lest I risk damaged to my credibility or expertise... Why sit in the dugout, well because there really isn't too much of an upside for dealers to participate in guess the grade threads. If they miss the grade (based on a "picture"), then potentially thier credibility is deminished,, if they hit, then thier credibility really just stays where it is. Although Mikenoodle did point out something I hadn't considered, in that missing low (undergrading) at least demonstrates that you tend be a more conservative grader than a TPG.... but even this could cause problems in that some customers could expect undergraded coins if they ever purchased raw coins from me (at least undergarded vs. a TPG)..... These are some smart dealers, as noted by thier absence from this thread. I'm unsure, but don't think they feel the need to defend themselves in this thread as you say..... I'm hoping they got what I was saying and understand that it was the truth poorly shaped as a jestful bard. Lastly, the HA award is not dubious... It's incredibly common. I'd take it over an Oscar any day of the week, primarily because of where I've seen them issued. I've seen 20-30 of these handed out will full color and parade in charitable fund raising events,, it's good natured and fun....
Yes, it can be. But the way you worded your comments had an awful lot to do with it. And no, I am not referring to your use of the term HA award. What I am talking about is the prceived "tone" you were using. It came across as insulting to many folks whether you intended it that way or not. And no I'm not imagining it because I received several complaints about it. That was the real problem with your comments - the tone in which it was perceived. A word of advice for everyone. Correctly expressing the "tone" of comments in written form can be difficult at best. That's why it is so important to use emoticons (smileys) because emoticons express your emotions at the time. So when you are trying to interject humor or irony into your comments - use the appropriate smileys. They go a loooooooooong way towards preventing misunderstandings
Just a suggestion....if you're making this into a contest, you should put ALL the coins in a single thread. You should also be aware that grading from pictures (and weak ones at that) is NOTHING like grading in hand. This is particularily important at the higher grades. We cannot see luster so much on a picture. We can only provide an educated guess based on limited information and no more. :secret:
Yea you should do this again but this time post all about it in the topic ahead of time so everyone knows. Seems like it was a good idea implemented poorly I'm just glad I got first as while job hunting I'll copy this contesst in with my resume to the grading services
I'm a noob at grading (and still in training) but I'll be happy to take a shot in the dark: 1st - 58 (couple scratches: 1 in front of his mouth and 1 in his beard) 2nd - 55 (couple scratches: 1 under his nose and one on his bowtie, plus less strike) Btw, the 1st one has a great color/toning! EDIT: sorry, didn't realize I was as late as I was...but none the less, I didn't cheat and look at the results till after I posted. lol
Here are some pics of the 09s vdb and 31d that from the other thread, under better light I think....... vf20 and ms64. :hammer: And that wonderful NT 1913 reverse that was mis-graded and questionable color <juiced this one abit to help every see and appreciate it's fully glory>. It's really amazing how light affects pictures.... maybe I'll post some more of my fantastic psydo-focused pics in another guess the grade thread and keep a running total for the players, less the colorful commentary. It will be interesting to see how the players use thier experience and expertise to filter through to an approximate grade... will take knowledge of reading poor pictures as well as knowing how PCGS grades. Will also throw in some other TPG's so we can rank each player across different TPG's....... what'cha think.
7 - 2 CENT RICK - averaged 5 pts off PCGS grades 09s vdb - 10 pts off, called a VF20 a BB 13 - 0 pts off, nailed the BB WOW!!! I am ranked #7. I am throughly amazed. Because: A. I do not collect Lincoln cents and I certainly have not learned how to grade them. B. Even though, occasionally I have been known to drink a bit too much wine or alter my consciousness through other means, I do NOT recall taking part in this grading thread. If I have, please show me the post and I will consider going to rehab. Oh what fun.
2cent - there were 4 coins listed in the game in two threads,, you chimed in on the other thread containing the coins listed....
Show Me and call the guys in the white jackets Baha - Please, show me my post and then call the guys in the white coats. One of us is crazy and I don't think its me.:smile
my bad 2cent,,, it's me.. You did chime in on the other thread, but where I got two BB's from you is unknown to me now.... anyway, you typed in the following: "I don't want to come off as a jerk but I think your coins would photo more accurately if you removed them from the 2X2's."..... I must have transposed you name with someone else's.
I think the mayo jar will go a long way in convincing those guys that you're the best man for the job......
