I just made some wax intaglios of Roman emperors and couple others, definitely not as artistic as the ancient engravers, but if you can at least identify one of them, then I'm on the right track. So here they are: Emperor 1 Emperor 2 Emperor 3 Emperor 4 (this one's tricky) I also tried making a facing bust of Medusa And a replication of a Soloi stater, the wax die on the right broke when I was taking an impression! Any feedbacks welcomed!
I admit I don't understand what you're doing (I know the term but never understood the technique) - but it looks very cool. My guesses, probably far from the truth 1. Septimius Severus 2. Vespasian 3. Tiberius 4. I would say Nerva (obviously why I said this, since you mentioned "tricky" then my answer is Claudius I 5. I saw that you mentioned it's Medusa right at the only "portrait" I was able to recognize without doubts.
Verus was my 2nd guess for first coin but the result looks to have a longer beard. And yep, 3 is definitely Nero after seeing @Roman Collector's answer.
Well, not bad, 2/4 I have no idea why I didn't recognize Nero as the neck beard was a major hint. As for Nerva, it was the first emperor I "recognized" after the well known nose but since you mentioned it's tricky my idea was "It looks like Nerva but it's not".
Did you make them yourself? Like engrave? If so, I'm incredibly impressed! If not, well...I'm still pretty dang impressed haha.
Yeah! I drew an outline of the busts and dug in! Just makes me wonder how talented some people were 1000s of years ago to make accurate depictions on metals! an art that literally vanished even before the fall of Rome and only made a come-back during the Renaissance.
I'm suitably impressed! It really does amaze me to think of how ancient peoples made such beautiful works of art on such tiny pieces of metal with just the most rudimentary tools.
Great work @JayAg47 ! I follow the guesses above. Anyone here collect ancient intaglios? I have a few but the ones I can afford are not the most artistic and are pretty crude... but I love them! (*all from reputable sources)
