I purchased this hefty little 62.9 gr weight in the last Biga auction. It's listed as Greek...I don't know how Greek it looks to me, but I'm no weight collector. It's littered with cool imagery! A horse rider, deer?, a couple and what I think is Nike: Auction house description: GREEK.Commercial Weights.(Circa 4th-2nd centuries BC).Ae. Condition : Good very fine. Weight : 62.9 gr Diameter : 19X43 mm The real bonuses appeared once I got it in the mail, three other sides are decorated! Only one appears to not have any design. Here's the ends. One blank and one with what looks like a leaping dog or horse: A weird line along this side: And then my favorite side which had a cat? And a seated figure giving hi five to a standing figure: Here is the front and back with the lighting at a different angle than the sellers photos: I also purchased this byzantine weight/ throwing star/ sheriff's badge at the same auction: BYZANTINE BRONZE WEIGHT.(Circa 6th - 9th century).Ae. Condition : Good very fine. Weight : 35 gr Diameter : 41 mm So don't wait, and show off your weights, tell me your thoughts on what the image may be and or mean and any other weight you need to get off your shoulders!
Doesn't look like any commercial weight I'm familiar with, Greek or otherwise. The weight though is 1/8 of the Mesopotamian/Persian mina of c.500 gm. Ross G.
You always find the coolest stuff @Ryro ... You said you are not a weight collector - well I think you are now.
Thanks! I thought Persian when I first saw it, but they have been good with their other descriptions. Now I wonder...
Sorry...couldn't resist that one. Back on topic, that is a very neat piece with great artwork! I have seen a few weights for sale here and there but never looked into them much. Now I'm intrigued.
WAAAY COOL, Dude! Really great! Bonus details on the sides are very cool. Congrats. And, a Sheriff's Badge?
