The last CC GTG was a very successful discussion. Let’s try again, with one of my favorite coins. Please feel free to comment. These are better photos, that do reflect the coin’s appearance.
I'm not sure how TPG look at the shelf wear, but still a nice coin. I'm guessing 65 DMPL. Could be higher. Why do you say that. Just curious.
I love the intense cameo look on a coin that is 140 years old. This one has incredible contrast. Has the mirrors and contrast of a modern, with the vintage of a cc dollar.
Very nice Morgan!! I agree with you, there is nothing nicer than a cameo Morgan. I want to call it a DMPL, but the light frosty appearance of the fields on the obverse and around UNITED and AMERICA on the reverse make me say PL. If the fields were as deep and black as they were around the eagle, I'd call it DMPL. I hope I'm wrong, but I will go MS-65 PL. Edited to add, it could be a simply lighting issue that is making me go PL.
Proof Like Morgan's tend to show every minor break in the frost as a hit in photos. I suspect this coin is gorgeous in hand and is every bit an MS66. As for the frost, I think it just barely lacks the contrast to be DMPL. Knowing @Morgandude11's tendency to find gem Morgan's, it very well could be a DMPL...but based on the photos I don't think the contrast is there and would call it a very nice PL. So, I'm going to say MS66PL.
MS 65 DMPL ...mirrors look deep, fields are clean, and what might be thought of as hits on the cheek, I'm guessing is mostly breaks in the frost
MS64. Could be PL or DMPL but really not something that can determined from these static images. Could be 65 depending on how severe the facial marks really are. Frosty devices can really make things appear worse than they really are.
Cheek “marks” are frost breaks. The devices are extremely frosty, adding to the contrast from the die polished fields. It has a strong cameo appearance in hand.
"Yup. Therein will be the dilemma." Not trying to get put on ignore..... just trying to help. LOL What could we do to eliminate the dilemma from the equation? You take good photos but seem to have a slight lighting problem and a little crisper focus. What kind of lights are you using and have you tried different kinds or a mix? Do you use any kind of stand to hold or stabilize the camera/phone?
Valid questions. I just recently got a new Nikon, after selling all of my old DSLR equipment. I have a mirror less, full-frame Z5, and use the long zoom lens. As regarding light, I’m experimenting with different lighting conditions—natural light versus incandescent lighting. I am not satisfied with the results so far—coins seem to photograph either excessively detailed, exaggerating every nick, or looking overly flooded out, and are overly flat-textured. I must experiment more.
