I'm always amazed when I see people paying outrageous money for slabbed coins at auction . Yesterday I tagged about a dozen coins that sold at the Heritage 232210 Auction last night to see what they would sell for. Some people (I refuse to call them collectors) who know nothing about ancient coins were buying plastic slabs again, & not the coins in the slabs . Some of the results were truly crazy ! Pictured below are a few of the results. Someone paid $990.00 for this coin ! The coin pictured below is equally scarce but in superior condition, it cost me $68.00 from a Roma auction 3 years ago . Maximian Herculius, AD 286-310 (struck AD 300), Aquileia Mint. Billon nummus: 9.87 gm, 28 mm, 11 h. RIC 29b. This coin sold for $1,740.00 ! The coin pictured below cost me $660.00 at auction several years ago . This double denarius of Philip I is one of the most common coin types in the entire series, it sold for $528.00 ! I've sold superior examples of this coin type for less than $100.00 ....
Insanity! I bought this fella for around $150-175 last year I believe. Probably would sell for multiples of that at HA these days.
I like my Aquileia follis much more than the Heritage example, and mine cost a quarter of the amount and has full silvering.
I think this Moneta nummus plate coin is worth posting again, from ROMAN COINS and Their Values IV, by David R. Sear, Copyright 2011.
