My Las Vegas Plaza Hotel Coin Show Report....

I just returned from the Las Vegas Numismatic Society's 47th Annual Coin Show held at the Plaza Hotel. This show has over 100 tables and is usually a very good show. It's held in the Plaza Hotel in downtown Las Vegas at the end of wonderful Fremont Street. While the show started out pretty slowly, thanks to a view large sales and some great buys, it turned out to be one of my best Las Vega show. Friday was very active, and what was selling the best for me and for what I heard from other dealers was material under $200. Surprisingly, my most popular items were 2009 and 2010 penny rolls and single coins! I only had a dozen or so 2010 penny rolls and I almost sold out of them.

On set up day, a vest pocket dealer showed me one of the most beautiful large cents I've ever seen! It's an 1851 NGC MS66 RB with gorgeous lustrous and sparkling magenta toning. I couldn't resist it and will post pictures after Todd takes photos of it this week in Baltimore. It's truly a stunning piece and is making me want to start collecting large cents (but that's too much of a slippery slope for me since I just got into Conder tokens!) I also picked up a nice 1877 in MS64 BN, and a couple other very pretty toned Lincoln cents - photos to come!

We had dinner last night at Binions Ranch Steakhouse which is at the very top of Binions Casino on Fremont Street. They have excellent steaks and service, not to mention a most beautiful view of Las Vegas. I highly recommend it. And of course, I had a lot of fun playing poker after the show, mostly at Binions.

Today being a Sunday of a 3-day show, I didn't expect to do much business and thought I would just go in for a couple hours then pack up so I could get started on that long drive home. Well, first, I had a nice surprise when Bohiman stopped by and chatted with me for a few minutes. He said he was in town for a wedding and was pleased to find out this show was the same weekend. A couple other board members who mostly "lurk" also stopped by just to say hi, and one even bought some of my 2010 pennies! Then, even more surprisingly, an older gentleman came by my table and bought some nice VF/XF key date pennies. What was even more special for me was that he told me that these coins just about completed his sets. I am always honored to be able to help someone achieve their goal of completing a a set they have been putting together for years.

Any way, the drive home was long, especially since there was an accident on I-15 just outside of Las Vegas which delayed everyone by about 45 minutes. Right now I'm watching the Olympic Closing Ceremony, and will focus on getting everything ready for Baltimore tomorrow!

I had every intention of making that show. But work had other ideas. My friend worked his shop's table there all weekend and had about the same results...slow to start, then good. Oh well, maybe next year.....maybe not.

Penny Lady, will you be at the Forth Worth show? I plan on going and would like to visit your table.

Did you make it to the tables at all? I find it awfully suspicious that you were in Vegas without playing cards at least once. :D

EDIT - OOPS! I see it now. Neeeeevermind.

Texmech, yes I will be at Ft. Worth. It should be a good show, and I'm really looking forward to it since I haven't been to Dallas/Ft. Worth before! The ANA is hosting a big BBQ bash which should be a blast!

And Ardatirion, I absolutely wouldn't miss a chance to play some cards in Vegas!! That's one of the reasons why this particular show is my favorite show to attend! Also, NASCAR was in town and the whole place was swamped with NASCAR people, and I have to say there are some awfully cute NASCAR guys who like to play poker, sooooooo that doesn't hurt much either!

Thank you PennyLady for posting your report and review . . .
I do not find that out of line sensing todays economic issues... Discretionary income is being judiciously spent..

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a vest pocket dealer???
    Thanks

It's simply a dealer who travels from show to show without setting up at a table - he/she walks the floor selling coins out of his "vest pocket" so to speak, but actually out of large briefcases or suitcases.

We did a thread on that subject a while back, it was fun coming up with possible kids names........as I recall PL suggested James Cash........just call him JC.......:D

Sounds like you had a great time. Hopefully you stocked up for your next shows.

On the current sidebar, my mother (Elda) used to be a teacher. The teacher in the room next to her was Mel Berry. The kids always used to tease her that if she had married Mel, her name would have been...........

Charmy - did you run into Lehigh? He's a Vegas man, ya know.

I too would love to see that large cent. From what you describe, it sounds like a winner! Might make a nice companion to my similarly graded 1854, but I'm sure I can't afford another.

Thats a shame. I WAS in Vegas last week 20th-27th stayed @ the Mirage, but we went and saw a show up on Freemont (The Rat Pack is Back) at this same hotel Plaza(on the Friday night 26th before we flew home back to Toronto on the Sat, 27th.)
I saw the sign saying the coin show was on the 3rd floor, but it was 7pm and we had to get in to see Frank, Joey, Dean, and Sammy as it started at 7;30.
By the time we got out of the Rat pack Im sure the coin show was closed for the day.
If your ever up on Freemont make sure you go into Binions and you can get your picture taken with $1,000,000 on a table in front of you, as well as check out the psychadelic lights during the Freemont Street experiance
