I want to submit to NGC, but...

I am going to submit this 1970 S Lincoln cent to NGC for grading. However, it has a hazy stripe running through the obverse and on the high-points as well. Is this haze PVC damage???

Then there are tiny scratches/contact marks (two being deep scratches identifiable with the naked eye, the others you cannot see with the naked eye) that are on the obverse as well, along with a few tiny black dots.

The reverse is problem free, it is the obverse that worries me. If the haze is indeed PVC, I know NGC won't grade/encapsulate it. This coin appears UNC, so I was hoping it would still receive an MS grade, IF that haze is not PVC damage. I intend on using this as a tool to be able to identify small dates, but since it is my first/only small date, I wanted to slab it.

This coin looks much better in hand, there is lots of luster present. But the pictures REALLY highlight it's flaws.

Can someone with grading experience give me some advice on how I should proceed with this coin? And offer any guesstimates as to how this would grade for an NGC submission?

    Thanks in advance!

I don't know what is going on with your coin, but unless you have a method of getting free shipping, you are going to spend a minimum of $35 to get a coin that might be worth about $40. Your economics don't jive.

Thanks for the quick response RLM. Nah, I'm not trying to profit off this coin, I'm more interested in getting this slabbed to use it as a tool to identify other small dates. Because having a coin in hand is WAY different than analyzing pictures until the cows come home. And it will also allow me to experience the slabbing process first hand.

I am really hoping it will obtain an MS grade, albeit probably a low MS60. But if a lower grade, that's ok too. But in you saying you don't know what's going on with this coin, are you saying that the haze may not be PVC damage? It would be great if it was just natural toning...ugly toning, but NT nonetheless :eek:hya:

Can anyone else add some feedback on my coin based on your experiences?

If that is all you want, here is some competition http://cgi.ebay.com/1970-S-SMALL-DA...mQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item414cf106fb. That is $38 for a MS63 already certified. My guess is that you would save money buying another like it and selling yours. If you get $10 for yours, buying one might well save you $20 and that is assuming yours grades.

As for yours, my first take is that yours will not grade. If it does, my second guess is AU. If you have a friendly dealer around, he may be able to save you money by either combining shipping or telling you that it will not grade (assuming that is the case).

And a Fourth point,..... I don't think that is even a small date.. Your top pick, it sure looks like the 9 is taller than the 7.. It could be the angle, but how sure are you it is even a small date? just askin....

Ah that's what I DIDN'T want to hear...but RLM, you're grading expertise has been rock solid; you're rarely, if ever wrong. So I'm going to save myself the heartache and take your advice.

I'll still have my "tool", it just won't be graded.

    Thanks again!

Yeah, those pictures didn't illustrate the date in the best manner. I'm 100% sure, this is a small date though....I attached some better pics of the date for you to see.

I am pretty sure it is a small date even from the original pix.

No reason to have this graded. It is a small date but it would only MS-62. or 3 if graded maybe less - these are availible and common raw in this grade everywhere. Value $35, $40. no reason to send this one anywhere!

Hey schatzy, thanks bud. I'm going to do exactly that. While trying to learn the differences in date types, I've become quite fond of the 1970 s cent.
