Another hole filled. But not officially until I ID the variety. Spent about 15-20 minutes on it already. I've got the books; just need to sharpen my technique. I'm using Noyes' and Wright's books. .
Attribution took about 3 minutes. Quick first clue start with the point of leaf below S2, that eliminates all but three varieties right there.
I downloaded pics of every year's varieties from the archives of past auctions provided at Heritage Auctions and organized the files by date. Combined with Newcomb's descriptions in "United States Copper Cents" the pics are a big help for all the years, especially ones with only a few varieties. Good luck with a year like 1847, even with the photos your eyes will cross before you are happy with your attribution.
Okay, I think I've finally got the variety identified. I see it as an N-5 (R-2) Getting this ID correct since I'm looking at another 1822 and don't want to duplicate the variety. They are pricy enough that I don't want two of the same.
