The only difference I see is in the edge lettering. Is it up or down? This occurs on Presidential Dollars and Sacagawea Dollars. If I’m correct, Position A has the edge lettering reading upside-down when the Portrait faces up. Position B is when the edge lettering reads normally when the Portrait faces up. I can’t get photos of this in the slab but here’s the graded coins.

Because the edge lettering is placed on the blank before the coin if minted, it is a crap-shoot which way it faces. Big deal, meh.
You are indeed correct. Other than that, the designation serves no purpose save for nit pickers, bean counters, paper clip counters and thread splitters.........
There's a 50/50 chance that the planchet would land into the chamber to be struck in either position. That's a marketing strategy to make it sound like it's an important issue. So if someone showed me that slab and told me "Hey look at this coin struck in position A" I would just yawn
This begs the question...Is a set complete without the two positions? Or does it even matter when you cannot see them once in a folder or album.
As I said above, I have a few, but is this one from wear and tear? Of course it has sat in my dad’s coins so I know it’s been there for years.
You’re welcome and now you have the information to see weather it’s a position A or B coin. Lol It’s only worth more in a high grade. The two I posted are from the coin and currency sets. A limited edition of 50,000 I believe. They sold out quickly.
I had to bring this discussion up because I just learned yesterday something that I didn't realize about the presidential dollars. I have a full set that I accumulated about 15 years ago. I thought I had a p and d mint regular strike and a p and d in enhanced strike, thus 5ea for each president, including the s mint. However the enhanced oins ended after Lincoln, so I guess I have extra p and d r3gular strike of each president. I knew about the positions a and b of the edge lettering for the p and d mints. Here is my new found knowledge; I guess I never knew that the s minted presidential dollars are only a position B, there are none minted in the position a. So there you have it, old dogs do learn new tricks. If I am in error of my new found discovery, please set me straight. Regards.
And another bit of trivia for you. In 2007 the segmented collars for the proof coins were all the same shape. On some of the 2007 Jeffersons the segments were put into the press in the wrong order. Instead of 2007 S E PLUIBUS UNUM IN GOD WE TRUST, they say 2007 S IN GOD WE TRUST E PLURIBUS UNUM. Once they were discovered they made changes to the segment so they couldn't be installed in the wrong order.
