I've only been here for a few weeks, but so far it's been enjoyable and I've learned a lot.

I've only been a member for just over a year! I found CT, I liked CT, so I stayed with CT! Simple as that! I've never even tried another place! As for the "Like" complaint, I actually think it works well! Sure, there are some who misuse it and turn it into a popularity contest, but who cares? I like it when someone "Likes" my comment! It lets me know I am still being a productive participant!!! Hope you all like what I said!!!!! ;););)

Sometimes, bad press is a good thing.
It seems like, the best thing about CoinTalk, is the large number of persons, who post on the forum. Also, the user interface is good.
The "History Of Byzantium" podcast looks interesting. Maybe I'll check it out. I'm also trying to read Norwich's 4 "Byzantium" books (3 detailed books, and 1 less detailed book), when I have the time.
I like the "Like" feature, because it lets me know, that a person viewed my post, and that a person understood my post well enough to "Like" my post, or at least liked the photos of the coins. It also lets me know, who that person was, which is nice to know. It's also nice to know, that a person liked my post. It makes me think, that I made a positive contribution, to the world, in a small way.
Of course, I try not to get "addicted" to Likes.
I also occasionally visit Coin Community Forum, and Forum Ancient Coins. However, those 2 ancient coin forums, don't seem to have as much traffic, as the CoinTalk ancients forum. However, it's nice to have alternative ancient coin forums.
I also like the amount of information, which is available, on Forum Ancient Coins, such as the "NumisWiki", which I often stumble upon, when I do Google searches for particular ancient coin topics. And, I like to search the Members' Gallery, on Forum Ancient Coins.

Actually there is a big worry you seem to miss. TINA. If anyone knows of a serious numismatic discussion group I would be interested to hear - I never found one.

There are some very competent members on World of Coins - but moderation there is in the hands of some very ignorant people.

Forum - I left after about a week when the owner edited my mail about the MZ II hoard. Funny that - as the NC referee had not queried the work when I published it.

CT stands out as being well moderated. On the content however - well - it seems from this thread the members do not want "serious" - and get their wish

Ugh... take the negativity and self importance elsewhere.

This is a place where both hobbyists AND those with more "serious" academic interests, can discuss ancient coinage in whatever format they wish. If the content is not up to your standard, start a thread, promote discussion (haven't seen one from you lately) and answer the questions of your readers in a way that doesn't make you sound like a B-hole. Many of us are members both of the "serious" boards and here at 'the fun place' (me too ;)), so get over yourself and either be value-adding or go elsewhere. Rather than complain, add your knowledge to the library of threads and educate and excite readers... or go someplace that you feel that strokes your ego in a more adequate way.

Edit.. this thread is a troll hole, I shouldn't have responded and will go back to posting my "non-serious" ancient coins.

I had to look up "TINA".
TINA = There Is No Alternative
    Is that what you meant?
I wonder, what percentage of CoinTalk persons, have ever seen the "TINA" acronym.
At first, I was wondering, if "TINA" was some sort of insult.
In addition to the forums you mentioned, there is also Coin Community Forum. I go there sometimes.
And, of course, you can always, start your own ancient coin forum.

    Delightful

"Coin Community"? Perhaps look up "Community, Identity, Stability" too?

Curious that you assume I have not. Anyone can contact me direct for details - otherwise - maybe I will be back in 6 months

Yeah, that’s Friday night taking but the point remains the same. This venue is what we make it. If you want to present and discuss beyond a show and tell, by all means… start some threads! I’ve seen your posts and know you have knowledge to share. Just know that your tone can come off as condescending. I want to learn from anyone that has something to post… which includes you.

You got a lot of stones comming here with your pompus attitude ,and start to criticize the membership as well its mods.
You should of taken my advice that you quoted me on.

Here's another piece of advice .....why don't you craw back into the hole that you just came from, and literally go do to yourself that is physically impossible to do! That should keep you busy trying to figure it out....
What a total butt wad troll!

I try to keep in mind that some visitors are "hey look what I found in the cointray" casual, and others are "stick up their *ss, get off of my lawn" academics, just like real life. I don't take it personally, some people simply don't realize they are being Richards.

Its not a "real member" just a troll if you look at his profile .....who decided to crawl out from under a rock it lives under .....and stir it up....

For the record, there are plenty of folks on this board with academic credentials who strive to be collegial. I’ve often found that the persons with the greatest disciplinary knowledge are also those who feel the least need to show it off.

In the midst of all the “Yay, CoinTalk!” banter (which I agree with), this stuck out to me. What has ended the hobby for you? That sounds very sad.

I follow venues in German, French and Italian besides CT and although they are highly valuable, they do not provide the relief that CT does. Nor the sheer amount of variation and diversity not only of interests but personal backgrounds. So out of all other forums, I prefer writing my threads here, while if I want academic level writing I go to Koinon or OMNI or INR etc. Im unapologetic about my interests in fields that are not very popular, at least in English venues, and still my posts receive kind and interested reactions even if not much in the comments section. We can't be all interested in the same things and that's ok, but snobbery is not the best strategy to employ when people have different interests than you.
