Yep, Google News tossed me that one, too. They do dribble out in a steady stream, though -- I doubt that'll ever stop, at least as long as there's circulating coinage.
I have also learned, not all, but a large presence of people selling on Ebay, a newbie best do their homework.
I'm surprised they stated "minted on".. Many articles like those say "printed on".. The author did their homework but not completely.
I sometimes think that it ought to be suggested to newbies that they need to have the coin authenticated. Suggest that they submit it to a TPG. Okay, sometimes I'm evil
You have collected for years. A newbie could be 16 or 18 yrs of age. I learned a lot and still learning. I bucked back to I guess that some were not interested in helping “newbies” but many many have helped and nicely lectured.
A lot of we older collectors learned about coins with little resources because there was no internet and even the coin papers were few and far between. Now with the net we have the idea anyone can be an "instant expert" but of course this isn't true because one needs to know quite a lot just to know what to google and even then there is a lot of bad info on the net. Anything you google will turn up millions of hits even if the question is bad. Fortunately the hobby is about having fun and learning and not even an old curmudgeon like me can stand in the way. I know this is little consolation but there are harder fields to break into. The only rule a newbie really needs to remember is to sell a coin once in a while so you know what it is really worth. It's easy to buy coins cheap but it can be far trougher to get your money back. You don't want to wake up one day and find you're buried in your favorite hobby.
Understand completely. And yes, true, internet, well we have to be careful. The coins I look through are my father’s. He has from other countries and old stuff. Some I have posted prematurely in the past, but have learned. Or maybe not, lol I guess I remember when I was a newbie but you know what, I will always be a newbie because there are many as in you, here that know off the bat the look of a coin. I’m getting it slowly. I get leery to post so I just read a lot and look at the unique and pretty coins. I’m not selling. I’m keeping for son the ones I do have of value or sentimental. Thank you.
