Looking for opinions. I assume if I found it in Dad's stuff there's no way it has any "extra" value. So, I assume it's been doctored. I'm also not sure, even if real, if this one has any value much beyond melt because of the pitting/scratches. It's in a bath right now and if I can I'll post a close up under the scope of the not a mintmark. So, two questions: 1) Think it's real? 2) Any thoughts on grade? Thank you in advance!
The 1928 Philly peace dollar is the lowest mintage and key date.As of authenticity wait for more members to chime in.If real yes has much value above melt price, nice find good luck. https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-explorer/united-states/dollars/peace-dollars-1921-1935/17373/1928-1-ms/.
Like @potty dollar 1878 said key date. Be gentle with it, no rub n scrub to this, no matter what is on it. If genuine is worth a fair few $$$
DO NOT TRY TO CLEAN IT!!!!. What I would do is send it off to ANACS and pay the extra fee for Coin Conservation For coins determined to benefit from conservation.
Not seeing anything untoward. Let's have a look see after the bath. Stellar photogs and I hope the bath is nothing stronger than distilled water or acetone.
That is a lot of scratches in a little area -- an oddly specific area. But it might have been someone scraping away cruft to see if there was surface disturbance. It doesn't look to me like someone removed a mint mark, but I've never studied a removed-mintmark specimen, so don't go by my opinion.
I don't know if you will get a conclusive answer without an expert and it in hand. it's a couple hundred dollars in VG8 and upwards from there, I'd say, do what you can that's NOT invasive, and send it for authentication and grading. TO see what they think about it. It's worth the cost if it is, and worth the peace of mind if it isn't, in my opinion. under magnification it looks like a lot of scratches there, but seems there are a lot of scratches everywhere really and everything looks bigger when magnified. I can't say based on the pictures one way or the other.
I'm having a hard time being certain of the 8's shape, given the dark blotchy toning, but the upper loop does look a little too fat relative to the lower loop, compared to the CoinFacts image I just pulled up. What are you seeing in it? Do you think it's an altered 3? I don't know whether I'd be able to see that kind of surface disturbance in these photos...
I thought the 8 just had a little oddness due to circulation issues if thats what @charley is referring to.It does actually resemble a 3 somewhat could that be possible?.
Ok now I see it something is poking out from the right side I'm not liking that look at all very suspicious.
