Choose your weapons! Pool noodles at dawn? (Please let it be pool noodles. Nerf guns would be acceptable as well.) Wait, dawn is too early. I'll have to get back to you on that.
Here's two - a 1904-O Morgan I just picked up in an affordable lot (not in hand yet, seller's picture) and my holed 1861-O Seated Liberty Half Dollar. The 1861 half dollars from the New Orleans Mint have the distinction of being the only issue in U.S. numismatics struck under the authority of three different authorities. Until March of 1861, 330,000 coins were struck for the Union. Then 1,240,000 were struck under the authority of the State of Louisiana. Finally 962,633 coins were struck under the authority of the Confederacy.
Very interesting! Thanks for the history lesson!! I had never even considered that as a possibility!!!
Golly gee dagnabbit you guys just made me depressed as I don't have ANY O mint coins. Maybe I could work a D into an O?
Here’s one I sold last year. As @MIGuy mentioned, the 1861-O half dollar was struck under three governments as the year progressed: first, a few under United States authority, then some under the seceded state of Louisiana which had not yet joined the Confederacy, and finally, the remainder was struck under the Confederate States.
Hah, I remember when you sold yours and the history associated - that's what prompted me to buy one that I could afford at the time - as yours was too nice for my budget then! Such a neat piece! That is a lovely coin!
