Yes they are. The problem is that probably the longest running argument there is among recognized "experts" in numismatics is exactly what defines an error and a variety. And there has never, ever, been a consensus on the matter. In other words you can have 2 experts standing face to face and one will argue a given coin is an error while the other argues it is a variety. As for this comment - Well, that may be your opinion, and you may think they "shouldn't" be posted there. But just because it's your opinion that doesn't make it "wrong" to post about them there. It only means "you" think it's wrong. But here's the thing Paddy, you're allowed to think it's wrong, but at the same time others are allowed to think it isn't !
12 years It's not proven to be incorrect which is why I said some may disagree. It's nothing to do with experience, it's an opinion.
I asked this same question a couple years ago. Told they won't change the setup of the forum to add varieties, and there is no variety section so just use your best judgement on where your variety belongs, be it errors, just in coin chat, us coins forum, world coins forum, ancient coins forum, or what's it worth. Put it wherever you think it will work the best and cross your fingers. Worst case a moderator will move it to a better suited place if it's totally wrong. LOL a variety is an occurrence that repeats exactly from coin to coin, and an error is an occurrence that does not repeat exactly from coin to coin. Technically all are "errors", varieties aren't necessarily made on purpose but they could be. oh, and if anyone gives you guff, there's an ignore button on everyones icon to shut them down from raining on your parade. Ain't nobody got time fo that!
Maybe the MODS should change the title to Anomalies (NOT)! Seems to me too many are splitting hairs any more! Error or variety, cent or penny, who cares as long as the intent is understood to the point the OP receives the needed information!!! Seems like the only safe place to start a thread about U.S. coins is Coin Chat or U.S. Coins but does that really accomplish anything? I think not! Many times I have read posts that tell the OP they should post their coin in a different category to get better/more replies, and that's accurate IMO, but the choice still belongs to the OP! It's just common sense to post where you think you'll get the best reply! PLEASE!!!! Let's loosen up and enjoy the hobby instead of arguing over trivial matters!!!!!
LOL A fan of "The Big Lebowski"? Thanks everyone for the comments and input. EDIT: Deleted irrelevant info for a different thread.
Oh, yes, absolutely (he could be useful around here). I am a bit concerned that the recipient of my underappreciated wit may have read into my post a less than friendly intention. I hope not and apologize if so. I don't want to be #1-100 on anyone's Ignore List. (101 is OK, though. It 'sings" for personal reasons). BTW, never delete irrelevant info. That is what makes posts fun, when different threads get intertwined. Who's on First stuff is great.
