Another attractive Morgan up for auction, ending in 8 hours. Three questions:

    1. Is the toning worth a significant premium?

    2. What will be the final hammer price?

    3. What would you pay for it, maximum price?

So, here's my thought on this coin. It's a well struck (as are most 1880-S Morgan's) example...it's certainly not an exceptional strike but it is a lovely coin. From what I have seen...untoned MS67 examples sell for $900-$1100 depending on the day. So, the coin is worth at least that.

I do think it has attractive toning but there is also a finger print in the toning at about 7 o'clock that I find distracting.

I do think this does bring a premium...but not a massive premium. I'd say 25% max. Basing that on the upper end of the range I gave before ($1100)...that would be $1375.

    I don't think I'd pay more than $1100.

I think the coin deserves a toning premium, but not a significant one. I'd say 10%-25% over a generic MS 67.

I'll guess it gets to $1,550.

I'm avoiding MS 67s since the price has spiked too much for my liking. Generic examples were in the $500s in early 2020 and now range between $800 and $1,100. I'd go after this one at around $850 (but know that would not be enough to win it).

I would agree. It is an attractive coin, but not a monster toner. It deserves a premium, but for me, most of the money is in the high grade, rather than exceptional toning. I think it will go in the $1500-1600 range, but I would have not gone beyond the $1000-$1200 that it was priced at.

It's not a bad looking coin,
Yeah, I would expect to see it priced at a premium. I like that it is one sided with only a light golden peripheral on the rev. I would think it sells at $12 to $1400.
I wouldn't pay more than maybe a $1000 if I was in the market.

I think we were all right on. I would not have paid more than $1000 plus the 10% maximum. Nice coin, but it did not go for a wildly inflated price.

It was an early "tracking" bid to follow the auction. I do that on certain coins. If they are too high when I come back Sunday (day of auction), I don't bid any higher.

I just use "watch item" for that, then get their "watched items are ending today" email. Is there some advantage to putting in a bid?

Not really; I just have even more items on my watch list. The ones with the small bids are ones I'm more likely to return to and bid again at the end.
