I got to looking in my collection of Brazil notes after commenting on a previous post about American Banknote Co. and found virtually the same kind of note printed by Thomas De LaRue company (Unfortunately my scan cut off the bottom of the note showing Thomas De LaRue printed it). Here are a couple of images of banknotes. The first is a note printed by ABC and the second by Thomas De LaRue. I don't know why they are virtually the same design from 2 different companies, so now I'll be looking for an answer.
I can see quite a bit of difference in them actually.. the green inked note has a significant amount of "white line" engraving in the ornamental's whereas the Blue one has white line and dark but a little more more dark line in the ornamental's...the patterns are similar but different. The geometrical lathe used for such engraving is extremely precise and can create finite patterns. Nice notes but two different styles all together... RickieB
I recall Thomas De LaRue printed several pre 1955 Netherlands banknotes as well. I'll post a photo of one if I can locate... I came up empty handed. I'll consult my Jaap Bolten "Dutch Banknote Design 1814-2002" and do a little research.
They are a similar design because the Brazilian authorities told the printers to make them that way. The notes are from the same series but different printers were used. There is nothing unusual about this. De La Rue and Waterlow each printed the fractional notes for the sixth series of British Armed Forces Special Vouchers. They look identical except for the printers names.
