I don't know how many of you also participate in other coin discussion groups online but today one of the Facebook lists had a classic example of what happens when we rely on translations that are never as exact as we might wish. "Hello everyone and good afternoon. We close the week with this beautiful Antoninian from DIOCLECIANO, practically non-circumcised. With all the silverware. I hope you like it." The coin shown was rather well silvered. I'm less than certain of the other mentioned merit. Uncleaned? Untooled? Unclipped? In Spanish it was "practicamente sin circular". I don't speak Spanish but would have guessed 'about uncirculated'. Facebook knows better than I do???
I don't think so, really, judging from the listings on acsearch: not for a solidus of Constans of that type in that kind of condition; I believe they're not particularly common. Although it's the ones from Thessalonica that are especially rare. In any event, I ended up not spending the money on it after all.
Interestingly, it apparently does apply - where the auction is purely online: https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and...ights-when-buying-online-at-auction-1.4464383 Plus - it would only apply where a consumer is purchasing from a company, not another consumer. So probably not on eBay, at least not to private sales. I've never heard of anyone trying to return things based on this, but it seems one would have a case. ATB. Aidan.
Hi @Burton Strauss III, My corollary (which hasn’t caught on yet) is: “Never attribute to stupidity that which can be adequately explained by laziness.” And to quote the Bard, “All’s well that ends well.” - Broucheion
Your title was perfect - but I didn't see any of those options in the poll? Glad you got your money back!
I was also disappointed when I saw the poll. I was expecting the choices to be: - Idiot - Nuts - Language Issue
I think the coin you bought is stellar though I understand the feeling that you feel it was misrepresented. I would keep it but then again, I would just love to have either one.
Definitely a language issue. It’s just merchandising, but in french is quite clear the seller is just emphasyzing how valuable the coin is. In a bad way imho
Few idioms translate well... One of the classic stories (urban legend) of machine translation is english-russian-english: The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak The vodka is strong but the meat us rotten https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/quality-is-the-first-occupation/
This is why I quit buying from non English fluent foreign sellers. The misunderstandings that I dealt with were for rather inexpensive singles and lots, so it wasn't a big deal, just annoying.
I didn't put up the poll until some time after I started the thread, and at the time I put it up the ongoing discussion was about whether to keep the coin anyway. Not about whether I was an idiot or crazy! As much as some of you might have preferred that to be the subject of the poll. After all, you were all still entirely free to discuss that particular issue regardless of the language of the poll!
Well I would have only had 3 choices as per your title, correct? -A) IDIOT -B) NUTS -C) LANGUAGE ISSUE I think you're pretty book smart - so IDIOT is out (in my opinion) While stating that you're not an Idiot, I have to balance that with the fact you spent 3K on a coin at 3am without proper investigation and due diligence on your part. However we all make mistakes - I have made many myself (but not in this price range..). LANGUAGE ISSUE seems to be an easy out. However you knew what you were dealing with - you identified the language of the seller, attempted to translate and missed the subtleties of the language in the description... and ordered a 3K coin at 3am without 100% clarification.. only to get burned. I notice that "impropriety by the seller" is not an option in your thread title. So this is obviously a "buyer" issue .. you knew it when you made the thread .. but your opinion on this point seemed to change as the thread went on... I'm glad you got your money back.
I wish I could :/ but if I could I would want what I paid for I am sure if I am spending that kind of money.
