Here's one I found today-actually found two in the same roll. Looks like a clash, but there is nothing that would cause straight lines like that on a clashed die(the lines framing cent on each side), so I'm not sure. Any ideas?
I've never seen this before, it almost has to have something on the dies. What it could be I don't know...
Not sure about the die clash, but fantastic bleepin' photograph! That with a microscope or something else?
It's not technically an incusion since that would be the obverse die hitting the reverse die and leaving it's impression on the opposite die surface. It does look like a reverse die was struck with something hard which left it's imprint in the reverse die. I guess the error experts can tell you what kind of error that would be.
If you've already got an SLR it's actually pretty cheap. I posted about it here: http://www.cointalk.com/t93175/#post817450
I magnified the picture and I have a question. When I blow up the image, the squiggly line through the ONE looks like a hair that was on the coin when the picture was taken. I'm not being silly, I just need to know if it is a line on the coin or a hair and whether I need to consider that line in my evaluation. Also, can I see an image of the obverse? It's an interesting coin.... Thanks, Bill
Bill, That line is indeed a hair. Whenever you have a Pug fur gets all over everything! I'll post a pic of the obverse as soon as I get home today. Thanks, Jody
It's die damage of some sort. This particular form of die damage can be found in coins from the teens through 1945. The best-known specimen is a cent from 1924.
Thanks Mike. That got me to searching and I found a reference to a '24-S with bar on the obverse(called the "goiter" variety) and a '24-D with the bar on the reverse. I assume these are the ones you are referring to.
I notice the 'E' in STATES is right over one of the lines and not affected at all. Tells me this was done before minting.
Bill, Here's a photo of the obverse as well as another photo of the reverse without the Pug hair and a photo of the reverse of the second coin just like it. I highlighted one of the markers which is a chip on the left wheat ear.
Now I have a question. The original picture shows a squiggly line through the second "S" in STATES and another through the "E". Are those present as in the first picture or absent as in the latest picture?
Since I just changed light sources, I had to go back and check the coin. I think that must have been a piece of fuzz from the cloth that I use to handle my uncircs. It's definitely not on the coin.
