Hello, I have a 1971 penny with no mint mark my question is with the initials to me they dont look wore off could they be missing?
No mint mark means it was minted at the Philadelphia Mint. The missing initials may not necessarily mean wear but most likely struck through grease. Just a worn die strike. Nothing major.
So, the initials are VDB, not DVB. As said above, can either be a grease filled situation or a weakly struck cent.
Boy, I was still trying to figure out what DVB meant when I read your post. Thanks for saving me a big headache. LOL
The missing designer’s initials are strange but not uncommon. Struck through grease is probably what happened:
Grease strike through is very unlikely because the initials on the die are RAISED not incuse. More likely is the initials were polished off the die. This happens sometimes, the best known case was in 1989.
The last show I went to a dealer had one on his case graded by ACCUgrade. ( I believe that was the TPG ) He wanted big money for it, and wasn't budging.
