So I have finally found something that I am 100% certain is worth sharing on here with everyone! Yep, you’re seeing it correctly! That is quite clearly the reeded edge of one of the many silver colored coins that have that trait, struck through AND RETAINED onto this 1924 P Lincoln wheat cent that I found!!! HOLY CRAP I am still freaking out about how flippin awesome this coin is! I have NEVER found anything so amazing! What a feeling!

Now, I know I have heard the term “retained strike through” at least a few times in the past, during my research and just the ima dating myself with numismatic information, including books, videos, forums, etc etc. However I can’t seem to find ANY examples of any retained strike through coins when I google it. So strange. Which means I certainly can’t find an example of THIS particular type of error with this particular material being retained in a strike through on ANY coin, let alone a 98 year old Wheatie!
I only wish that the Wheatie itself was in better overall condition/grade. But hey, I’ll take it!
It’s just with incredible that after alll that circulation, that dang thing is STILL attached! It’s def smushed into it pretty dang good. I ran my finger across it a couple times (I had to do it, but I promise I won’t again. Don’t flip on me, my friends! Haha! ) and it is without question basically become one with this penny. Sooo crazy and cool!
I can’t wait to hear what everyone has to say about this special piece!
Ok, lastly, I am REALLY in need of some funds at the moment, more so than I have in a very long time. I don’t know that I’ve ever openly shared anything about my situation on here, but just to make a very long story extremely short, I am now a single father of 2 little ones, ages 6 (daughter) and 9 (son) after losing my wife/ their mother in an auto accident 2 days after Christmas last year. So, things have been rough, to say the least. But it’s proven particularly tough to afford this TWO income dependent household on ONLY my income, alone.
Also, I am a master HVAC and refrigeration technician and have been for over 17 years. Well, in my career trade, winters are ALWAYSSS tough. Doesn’t matter if you are a gigantic company or a small one, everyone that shares this career field struggles in the winters and it is just a known fact that summers are feast and winters are famine. It basically all boils down to the fact that heating system break a small fraction as often as Air conditioning systems. To keep it super simple, this is mainly because AC Systems are very high stress systems that pull a ton of current (amps) and operate in extreme temps, humidity, etc etc. Where as heating systems are for the most part low voltage systems that operate in ideal environmental conditions for such machines.
Anyways, that is why I am really having a rough time financially at the moment and my point in sharing this is that I am 100% planning to sell
This rare find, no matter how much I want to keep it, because of how special it is. Nothing is more special than my angels or more important to me then taking care of them and keeping them warm with comfy clothes, their tummies full and a roof over their heads.
So, is anyone able to tell me what I should list it for sale on eBay for? What’s the best price that you guys think I could possibly obtain for this bad mammajamma? LOL

thanks in advance for checking out my new crazy find and for smh and all assistance you are able to share/provide!

i hope all is well with everyone and their loved ones and that you are all happy, safe and healthy during these crazy times that we are all having to endure!

I have never heard or seen an error like that... I'm not entirely sure it is one. @paddyman98 will know.

  6. It’s most def one, my friend. It’s Just a retained strike through. But what’s so cool is that it’s a piece of reeded edge from another type of coin completely! Freakin incredible

  7. Hey Sal, do U think it’s one of a kind? Or have U seen this before, sir?

I don't know how it could of been done unless David Blane worked there.
 No seriously, I would like an experts point of view.:bookworm:

  9. I mean, reeded edged of coins are known to exist loose from their original source coin. So, somehow it ended up either on the planchet somehow or on the die or in the press or in the annealing unit, etc. Right? And then just got struck into the Wheatie. Right? Why don’t I think of it as so impossible to have happened? What’s wrong with me? Lol

well, I just know that I have seen some Seriouslt and truly insane and near impossible to make sense of or even come up with a semi-acceptable scenario and sequence of events where they could’ve come to be. But there they are! Lmao! I mean, there are certainly strike through just as cool and mind blowing. Pretty much any of the items of strike through other than wire from the brushes, in my opinion, is hard to fathom how it got in there snd that happened. Lol right? Or am I alone on that? LOL either way. This thing is legit snd I love it! Sooo freakin ridiculously cool!

Honestly, it looks like glue or some other dried adhesive.
If you wanna know for sure, give it an acetone bath. It won't hurt it if it is a strike through, which I highly doubt.

Now that I look at it again, I agree with @furryfrog02. Also, I have never heard of the rim just falling off unless done on purpose.

That didn't leave the mint like that. Whatever it is happened after it left the mint. PMD

As above, it's not an error, and it didn't leave the
US Mint looking like that. It's PMD

Looks like glue to me. Even looks to be peeling away at one point on the rim.

From the third picture, it looks like adhesive. It was glued to something. See if an acetone soak doesn't remove it.

  20. It’s metal, no doubt. Not adhesive. My photos Always suck, but in person it is silver in color. And it is imbedded into this coin. So dam strange.
About Sending it off, I thought they won’t slab coins with stuff like this, where it has basically hanging off of it, for a lack of a better way to put it? Like retained laminations, they said in the grading 101 class that they don’t slab it because i guess the proceeds of vacuum sealing it, would possibly pull off the loose piece of lamination. And I thought it was the same deal for retained strike through like this type of deal? Now I’m curious.
But I’ve been looking at this coin under the digital microscope for a few weeks on and off and I have never once thought that I saw adhesive or anything else just stuck to the front of the coin, my friends. It took me a half a day where I first found it, put it down and then picked it back up later, to come up wktg the reeded edge theory. When I first found it I kind of just thought it was a lamination or something, didn’t think a whole lot of it, BUT when I picked it back up and stuck it under the scope it instantly just jumped out def me as the reeding of another coins edge. And that’s what I’ve thought ever since.
And yes, coins do indeed lose their reeding on the edge for a few different reasons. I, of course, did some research on this thing, trying to figure out WTH it was, etc and I read something that actually has a list of like 4/5 different ways that a coins reeded edge can come off like and be a separate piece of debris to travel around. Dang, I wish j could remember where that was written. Hate that crap.

but, oh well. I don’t know what to do now. lol

And of course, THANK U EVERYONE for your kind, thoughtful, positive and uplifting words. Things have been truly beyond difficult and I just know I’ve lost a good few years off my life with all the stress. I am normally a stress free, laid back, always positive, always smiling and laughing, so my body and my psychi just isn’t used to this crap. I hate it with every fiber of my being. I can tell ya that, friends! UGHH “X INFINITY!!!” As my son would say! Lol
