wow! it looks genuine to me. very nice find!!!! I would spend the money to have it authenticated by a major grading service. It's that important to the value of the piece. Normally, I don't advocate a lot of third party grading, but in this case the authentication will boost the value quite a lot.
Thanks, Mike -- what are your opinions of the PCGS vs NCG? I have a higher opinion of PCGS, but that's based on nothing but general perception and hanging around the boards the past 2 months. The dealer I have the best relationship with is (I believe) on the list of NCG member dealers, but not PCGS, so if I have them submit it for me... Along the same lines, is it alright to have a dealer submit or should I get a 1-year membership and submit personally?
It's in an air-tite holder now... took it out of the 2x2 yesterday. A couple of the photos are "naked"... the latest pic is in the air-tite
ok... that makes sense now! I thought you were pulling my leg with the pics because the close-ups have a gasket around the edge of the coin much like it will after being authenticated. As for NGC or PCGS my answer is very wishy-washy. There are certain series that for whatever reason sell better in 1`holder over the other. ask around on the forum. Many will know much more about the subject than I will. one thing is for sure, there will be no shortage of opinions.
Got both the VDB 1909-S and the 1916-D back from ANACS today... both altered mintmarks. Oh well, back to looking up Morgans and Mercuries. In the meantime, what are some creative things to do with the fakes?
Absolutely a true statement. I don't know how it's done and I believe the OP coin is legitimate but if I had one I would definitely have it slabbed! :kewl:
When I took them to the dealer who sent them to ANACS, he warned me he didn't like either coin. I said, "even the dime? I felt pretty good about the dime." He said, "I've felt good about 1916-D's before, even bought 'em and found out later I messed up. I've just seen so many fakes that I'm not comfortable with this one."
At least you have found a knowledgeable dealer for the future. I and many others here would love to have them as a study group. If you decide to part with them. let us know. Jim
I'm glad the title of this thread wasn't something like "Granddad died and made me rich" Congrats on your finds! Quite impressive.
I don't really get the T$Money comment or the tgreen18 comment. It's too bad about that. It's actually rare to see someone come back and say the stuff came back as fake. At least you have the cahooneys to adimt it and are asking how to move forward.
Well, so many folks here gave their opinions (and some did a fair amount of work detailing the photos and explaining what they saw) about the coins when I first discovered them, I thought it only fair to tell everyone how the story ended.
