Do any of you use the Mega Red Book? I just ordered my first one and hope I didn't waste my money! LOL BTW Wizard Coin Supply has them on sale!!!
I bought the 4th edition (in 2018?) because it has a special section on dimes, which are my faves. The new 7th edition covers dollars. Not perfect but a very nice reference, no regrets buying it.
I've been getting each new edition, they are great with the detailed sections each year on a different denomination.
Wizard always have them on sale....but IMHO they are best out there for sales, service, and inventory.....their customer service is always spot on.
I have three of them. I got the 2nd, 4th and 7th edition. Each one focuses on a specific denomination. So the 2nd focused on cents and there is more detailed info for all the cents in that one. You don't necessarily need every edition. Just get the one that focuses on the denomination(s) you collect. I do a registry US type and a Morgan registry so I got the 7th edition. The 4th was on dimes which is pretty helpful. I just used it last night to identify an 1823 I purchased. Some of these books are about 2" thick. I'm happy with what I've got now.
Short answer is yes. Longer is that I use the little spiral-bound Red Book because it's easy to carry. Then I have the Mega RB because it has a lot more information. Then I buy the Whitman books that are specific to my collecting interests. Plus, I buy specialty books to further augment the reference base at my fingertips. What I've found is that the specific issue Whitman books have more information than the Mega RB as you'd expect. In some cases, the Mega RB has information that is not in the specific issue books and vice versa. So, they are like a set of Venn diagrams that overlap maybe 90 to 95% but that non-overlap is sometimes either valuable or interesting or both. My default is to buy more books rather than less and the cost of the books is minor compared to what I put into coins.
I love Ollie's. We have them in my area also (NE Ohio). I've picked up a few coin related books including year-old copies of the Blue Book. They also sometimes have one or two of the Whitman series on detecting counterfeit US gold. I should have picked up the Mega Red when I saw it there.
Yes, and no. I have the 3rd edition, but it mainly stays on the shelf unless I need additional information on a certain coin. I find it too unwieldy to handle.
I bought a large print spiral bound red book (not too big, easy to set out on a desk open to the specific page I want and large print so I can read it comfortably from in front of a keyboard with the book off to the side). I bought the 75th anniversary edition that covers through 2021, with some info about the 2022 coins coming out. I have chosen 2021 as the last year I will fill holes with circulation finds, so this will be the last red book I'll ever purchase. If I want detailed information on a specific series, I'll find it on the internet for free. If I can't find it there, then I might consider buying a series specific book.
I've never looked at one before. But this thread has me now considering getting the 6th edition for the additional information on half dollars.
Just received my 7th edition today! Not much time to look at it yet but a quick glance tells me I will enjoy it!!
I got one from my relative who had no need for it anymore. I didn't think I would like it however the next time I purchase the red book, I would seriously consider buying the Mega Red!
My question to this line of thinking is "why do you need a new red book so often"? Not demeaning your plan, just looking for a why?
