Its sheer insanity/ not good for our hobby:( World coinage same deal/ I bought a beautifull AV Dukat from Regensburg that would be slabbed as a "66" from German auction for 1800 euros/ Heritage sold a 62 for $13800 two years ago. lf - 2022-01-18T123235.543.jpg IMG_0701.JPG

Well let me ask a question.... I am a US coin guys that plays around the periphery of ancients. I have watched a few Heritage auctions on ancients and were surprised at some of the hammer prices. I have been searching myself for a silver tetradrachm with Herakles in a lion skin headdress. Something about that coin just gets me.... A fellow in the know felt I could get a decent example in the $500.00 range. Everything I have seen has been way beyond that price range..... Are ancients going the way of US coins? Are values in general going north rapidly?

Don't use Heritage as the standard for ancient auction prices. Coins tend to sell there for 50% or more than what they're worth. Personally, I've never won a coin there because I simply don't want to pay those prices.

If you're looking for a decent Alexander tet, then there are many for sale on vcoins for $500 or less. Other auctions like Roma typically have very nice coins that sell in that range.

In terms of your question, at the high-end, yes. Prices are increasing. For coins say under $2k, though, prices have been more moderate. There have been some types that have gone up ridiculously, but many of the common coins haven't gone up so much.

That’s actually a good idea. We could be selling pictures of our coins as NFTs ;)

Someone said you can fool few people for a long time or a lot of people for a short time. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to apply in coin auctions of the past 5 years

The dealer D. F. Grotjohn is already doing this.

In November I saw 13 ancient coins listed. One of the coins was a nice looking Alexander Octodrachm. The price was 3.5. The currency of that price is Ethereum, which works out to US$15,532. For those NFTs, the coin itself was included in the purchase.

Today I see 60 coins, but for the current lot only the images are for sale. Here is a nice picture of a Caligula denarius for ETH 0.05 ($154.09)

The real bargain is an Antiochos I stater photo for only ETH 0.0003 ($0.77).

I recently won a Zürich 1717 Doppel Dukat (Zwingli) for 2000 Sfrcs from Munzen-online. This coin is MS-66+ absolutely flawless, in Oct/ 2021. I can imagine this coin "slabbed" as a 66. Might add a "0"o_O
Problem is that US collectors consider "65/66 as GEM mint state/ Europeans/ Brits see same coin as a near MS/ fast st.
spl.......and will hammer for half the amt.

A few years ago, I had a couple of coins TPG just to see this fact/ all were Kunker fast stempelglanz (AU) All three coins came back as MS66/ MS65+/ 67

Wow, I had no idea. If this gets going it may have some unexpected consequences probably also for the coin search engines. There have already been discussions on the copyright of the coin photography and whether it could be considered a form of art. Imagine if you own that picture you could probably ask for a fee if someone else wants to use it.

As I understand it, buying an NFT image gives you ownership only of that specific digital image itself, and not the right to prevent copying of the underlying original photo or other digital images of it, let alone any rights in the coin itself.

So, basically, just bragging rights. Pretty useless, I think.
