It started with my interest in Native American Indian subjects on medals and coins.

These two sets are mine and I have another of each and some other duplicates.

Then I found some odd variations which are much more scarce to fairly rare.

The 1971 Bronze North Dakota Souvenir Dollar

    71GBronze.jpg

I've only ever saw one other and it was far more discolored and with even nastier spotting.
Those dark spots do drive me a little crazy but what if I never see another? I gotta have at least one in any condition.
It is a very scarce issue in bronze
will hopefully one day be replaced.

1972 Indian Head South Dakota Souvenir Dollar Bronze
    NGC MS68

I have the 1972 bronze SDSD "Indian Head" here which is graded by NGC as MS68 without comment. I have a second one of these raw. I also have a third in a Capitol Plastics 12 hole set. (See below)
These are known as the "Error" issue you will see in that set. They are scarce, but I am sure, more common than the 1971 bronze shown above.
These both have the 1971 type obverse but this one is dated 1972.

    1977 Indian Head North Dakota
    .999 SILVER Souvenir Dollar

    77silverG.jpg

This one is probably somewhat rare as it is .999 silver and has a strong cameo appearance.
I can find later than 1980 Dakota issues in silver occasionally but I didn't collect those and have no intentions to at this time as they don't have these Indian 1971 to 1980 obverses.
I find it interesting that the only other .999 silver from the 1971-1980 series in either North or South Dakota Souvenir Dollars I've seen is posted on Token Catalog dot Com by Maverick911 and is from 1977 but from South Dakota. See token TC-468646.

The four hallmarks on the edge each within a circle on the edge are what appears to be C, a conjoined HM, 77 and P.

The .999 F. S. on the edge is for .999 Fine Silver.

I was told there were only a "handful" of these made, possibly as low as 25 pieces and I am in agreement since the edge on this one is low at 16.

1972 Central Dakota Coin Club Souvenir Dollar "SPECIAL" "ERROR" and 1971-1980 North Dakota Set

    1972CentralDakotaCCspecial.jpg

A completely different set aside from my others that I have shown above.
I have seen this set and similar holder for sale but missing the last two.
This time I found one complete. I had suspected the 1972 Bronze South Dakota was the error but found no info on the 12th hole. Now I know it is for the 1972 Dakota Central Coin Club which is most likely what this set was assembled for and made available to Central Dakota Coin Club Members.
Looks to be in very nice condition. Had to have it!

I've disassembled it once and carefully sanded out the holes so these fit better. Either some medals were oversided, or most likely, some holes were too small. I have to do a little more fitting but only a couple holes are off at the time I post.

Here's the obverse and reverse of the Capitol Plastics type holder as purchased.

Got any of these? Please post.

Hard work pays off huh. Nice and the year-by-year differences are interesting. Thanks.

Thanks everyone. They all are numbered on the edge. Must have been a subscription order because many of mine have the same edge number. Probably from the same owner as I got bunches at a time. Each year that customer must have gotten a new one with the same subscription number.

put these three words in eBay search. You'll see a bunch of different ones and some not exactly connected to the sets I collected. dakota souvenir dollar
I see that "sister" 1971 bronze is still up there that has worse spotting than mine. It has been there a long long time!

If you should chase these, be picky and tight on price. Sometimes lots of 5 or so also show up cheap.

Some were stored in flips that could have been PVC plastic. Be picky, patient, careful of PVC and be a bit cheap.
