Paul Harvey is another name of whom I had a great respect for. While I was in college, I worked in tobacco fields to help pay the bills for my wife and first two children. We had a portable radio and listened with an earphone. Mr. Harvey came on everyday, except Sunday at 12:30PM. His stories were captivating. I remember a story he told about Elvis Presley while he was in the army. As most of you know, Elvis worked in the ARMOR (tanks to you uneducated). It seems that during an exercise they were on, they got lost and ended up in East Germany. The crew was lucky that Elvis was part of that crew. He could also read maps and found out where they were and when they did, they skedaddled out of there.

    John Skelton Morgan man!

Ummm... I thought using them was the idea? Just reading them does increase the value, in the knowledge you gain. So enjoy them for that alone.

As we learned a few post ago.....knowledge is so much a gift....to be able to read ,understand, and retain knowlege is what keeps us sharp. I have at present within reach of me this very second no less than 27 books chair side. All pertaining to numastics. The gift that this hobby gave me personally was to appreciate books, and learning. As a grade school student I hated to read, research, etc.....
One reason I personally enjoy giving to YN's is that through Numastic a child can be enticed to learn more.....its a foundation as many other hobbies are for the youth to latch onto to help them focus on how something enjoyable can also be a lifes lesson.

You know its the real personal stories thats important as well entertaining. I have been fortunate enough to to educate myself to seek out truth.
Now truth isn't always pretty....but it is the truth. Candy coating, exaggerations, etc...don't educate they entertain .
The only heros are those whom speak truth to life. Entertainers are actors who act out stories that matter not if they are true or false.

I have several of his books. I am pleased with his expertise and knowledge. I pick one book at a time read and mark reference areas and move on to the next. So far, I'm on number 4. Got a way to go but it's worth it. @paddyman98, you didn't know. Here I thought you were the wizard-of-news. Just kidding!

I have the Double Eagle book which covers Liberty's and Saints.

Unfortunately, Bowers/Whitman haven't updated it since 2004. Since they still sell the book, I am very surprised they haven't updated it at least once since. I realize fewer people follow these coins and fewer buy/collect them compared to the others which are more afforidable....but we should have at least one update since. There's plenty of new information to incorporate, plus updated price matrixes.

Maybe Whitman will get someone else to do an updated version since Bowers is getting up there in years and is limited in how many he can do annually.

At least there is Roger Burdette's magnus opus on Saints..... :D

Seeing as Elvis was a delivery truck driver before his gained stardom, I would guess that was where he gained map reading skills.

I only have #20, first edition. I don't collect books on coins. #20 is great. I enjoy his section on the current events happening outside the coin world for each year of the series.

Since so few people collect the double eagles by date and mint, they probably have sold out the first printing yet.

You mean HAVEN'T sold it out, right ?:D

The good thing is that book covers 2 types of Double Eagles -- Liberty's and Saints -- so you appeal to two types of buyers.

But you are right, you have a limited group interested in that book if you go just by collectors plus a few non-collectors who just have interest in the coins and reading about them.

I still think a 2nd Edition updated with new information on some of the coins...plus much more accurate pricing (gold was ~ $425 /oz. when the book came out in 2004)...would lead folks to buying a new edition. I know I'd have interest in buying one....even if 80% of the book was unchanged.

A few new chapters....updates on commentary that has been supplanted by new facts...new prices and auction references....we have a winner ! :cigar:

Yep typo, I make a lot of those.

Yes it probably would. But then what do they do with the unsold copies of the first printing?

I think I had seen ones of those years ago. Just looking at the spine tells me so. When did they start printing those? I’m a troll
