New quarters featuring influential women

Personally, I think I am going to like the series. I had only heard of Ride and Angelou and had to look up the other three. That led me to one of my favorite things about numismatics, learning. I find the Wong quarter design the best and like the imagery of Angelou quarter, an obvious homage to her poem "Caged Bird." The reasoning behind the new obverse is clear, it was rendered by a woman and to that end fits the new series theme nicely. But I just don't like it, at all. I'll be glad to see them in circulation and look up the honored women, but I doubt I'll actively collect the series as I never even began with the states quarters except for silver proofs when I can get them cheaply.

Anything that raises interest and brings new collector's into the hobby is a good thing.

I do tend to think that often women with important accomplishments are often ignored and wiki pages dedicated to them are sometimes removed because they arent deemed important enough. It seems to me they are far more critical towards women than they are towards men as to who deserves a wiki page. Maybe it is good to have women you never heard of here because maybe we should have heard of them.

 

Or better yet, stick with allegorical representations of Liberty.

 

I think the first wives were all done in gold?
So that would eliminate Eleanor Roosevelt, Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Dolly Madison, etc. Helen Keller is already on a state quarter.
I can see Amelia Earhart, but the list is thin. I always knew about Sally Ride. But I am old. Betsy Ross? Harriet Tubman, but she is slated for currency? Clara Barton.

As of now no. That effort was abandoned and there's not a new design planned until 2030 so the decision obviously hasnt been made what it will be and probably wont be until after another presidential election which would have implications on who the Treasury Secretary is

 

Four years, 20 coins. then we get a year celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and then five years of youth sports.

Final design choice is made by the Secretary of the Treasury.

And maybe these will get some women interested in collecting. The hobby is too male dominated.

Hmm…..based on the 2022 selections this is looking suspiciously like the “American - Edited - Wymyn Quarters.” How about some more mainstream choices - Edited - ? Some suggestions: Amelia Earhart, Ayn Rand, Betsy Ross, Margaret Mitchell, Jean Kirkpatrick. Oh, yeah, that’ll cause some howling from certain quarters. (Pun intended.)

 

I do like the “new” obverse by Fraser, though. Such a noble and realistic portrait of the Father of Our Country. Should have been on the obverse since 1932 IMHO and most numismatists have felt this way for decades. Too bad it is being wasted - Edited - . Very annoying.

 

I have to agree. The U.S. Mint is going to assassinate numismatics in the same manner as the U.S. Postal Service killed stamp collecting. Putting out WAY too much material annually and charging an arm and a leg for proof sets, mint sets, etc. This is why a lot of collectors don’t focus on moderns much.

But it will be all for naught. Coins simply don’t circulate much anymore like they used to. Credit and debit cards and online transaction processors like PayPal have all just about done-in coins and currency. I will be surprised if the government doesn’t try to completely abolish coins and banknotes before the middle of this century arrives.

Here is a record of how many stamps the USPS has issued since 1847. This is based upon Scott Numbers. Notice that the first 2 groups take in many more years by covering the first 102 years. Then I have them by decade. I started collecting in 1948 and I quit in about 2001.

As a former stamp dealer, I could not agree more. It's like killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

 

Sure is a lot of "edited" going on here. I guess I ran afoul of a rule somehow. If so, mea culpa. Just giving my honest take on these new quarters whose designs were clearly heavily influenced by politics (ARE WE ALLOWED TO SAY THE "P-word?) of the censorship crowd type. These quarters STINK.

 

Ayn Rand? Since when do we put people that were born and educated in Russia on our coinage?
