What's up with this silver dollar and the price on the bay and elsewhere? Unbelievable, does anyone know why it's turning out to be a flop? There will be a new commemorative coin honoring the disabled, which should be released soon unless it's already on sale. Any thoughts?

I would like to get the Disabled vet coin too. Where and in what state are you all looking to buy it. Graded, proof, with coa or how are these usually bought?

I have a couple of Braille dollars but got them more out of habit than anything else. They won't be worth much because there were just too many made. Such a surprising development coming from the mint.

I bought two proofs from the mint, and they are a flop, no connection between me buying and the price I hope!

The whole commemorative coin is flopping here latlely. Boy Scouts coming soon,Girl Scouts in 2014 and just dissapointing coins on the schedule. Makes me wonder if I should just sell all of mine and buy Morgans or something that has more historical signifigance.
the mint really needs to wake up and give this program a shot in the arm. They was going to do the NASA 50th anniv. coin but thats stalled somewhere and NASA 50th was a couple of years ago. Hopefully the Disabled Veterans coin will be better than some in the past.

It's not so much the mintage numbers that determines a dollar amount for something but rather, demand. Take a look at the MS 2006 Franklin (commemorative) Dollars...both varieties had mintage numbers of 58,000. Now look at the mintage numbers for an 2001 American Buffalo commemorative....227,131. What does the Buffalo sell at? In the neighborhood of $150 while the Franklin can be had for pretty much mint issue price. Demand, not numbers, says it all.....:)

It's the subject, the Lincolns sold out, the Braille just doesn't interest to many people. I got a proof and Unc just to keep my collection going. It's better then the Little Rock which, in my opinion, is the worst looking coin ever minted.

Don't know what is being charged on Ebay but the going price seems to be around $47.00. How much was being charged/

    $31.95 Unc.

    $37.95 Proof

Those are "pre-order" prices. The prices were raised after the pre-order period. Blasted if I can remember what the prices were after the pre-order period.

$37 to $47 that's cetainly not the end of the world. It's just not a large amount of money but the percentage return is there. Who knows if it'll lose, increase or hold this value.

    It's a function of demand.

Most of these modern silver proofs have mintages in a pretty narrow range. So, it's a function of how many people want them.

Not many people really care about Braille, to be honest.

I have some of the coins, and I like them, but not too many people really wanted them.

Value = Collector Base / Mintage

Louis Braille = Ho-Hum Subject / Huge Mintage

The price swings on commemoratives have always been crazy. Some go way up from the start and die a few years later. Some are not liked from the start and go up later.
In 1995 and 96 they had the Olympic program. Folks got sick of the size of the program the second year and bought less. The MS ones from 96 are now the keys to the set. The four coins would probably cost about $1000 not including the half dollar. The mint actually gave me a the complete silver Olympic set of MS and Proofs for free. It was a fun time dealing with the US mint.

That's very eloquent, yakpoo. I guess I used more words in my post than I needed.

It's the subject. Honoring the two hundredth birthday of a Frenchman who had no direct connection to the United States. I doubt if "huge mintage" is the problem because it probably has the same authorized mintage as most commemorative dollars and it still hasn't managed to sell out, so it's mintage is still LOWER than most recent commem dollars.

Are you sure about those mintage figures?

Well, yeah. According to my "2008 Red Book". Perhaps someone with a more recent edition could chime in? Whitman is notorious for inaccurate numbers....:)
