Guess The Fake!! One of these Capped Bust Halves was sold to me as a fake. The other is underweight, I thought, so I emailed the reputable dealer from whom I purchased it and they did not respond. What say ye? Please explain in comments, thanks
No question, the 1809 is a fake. Looking at the T/I alignment it can only be the O-109, O-113 or O-114 but those have different digits and none of them have letters with missing serifs in the motto. It was probably polished to death in order to hide bubbles or other marks which shouldn’t be there. I’ll try to have a look at the other ugly thing you posted later today ;-)
I think the 1832 could be the O-106 variety, but if it’s underweight it’s most likely a cast counterfeit, too. @okbustchaser
the 1809 is a definite fake. The 1832 may be just a horribly abused but genuine coin, or a better than average fake horribly abused to disguise its shortcomings. I give it an 80% probability of being genuine (I refuse to be shoehorned into a binary decision).
1809 left me with no doubt about yelling fake. 1832 left me scratching my head, leaning towards authentic though.
The 1809 is unquestionably fake. Proportions are off on both the obverse and reverse. It was antiqued to make it look genuine. Not positive about the 1832. It is likely fake, but could be an abused, damaged coin. Not positive about the ‘32, but inclined to think both are counterfeit.
1809, definitely fake. 1832, I think was in a fire or something and I say real. I'm basing that on how crisp everything looks.
Thanks for the various impressions. The '09 was indeed the one sold as a fake. So no drama there. Now how do I authenticate the other one? It cost real money. Sorta.
