Really attractive 21. I'd be very very careful about doing anything additional to it. Good buy, congrats.

I'm not a coin conservation expert, but some here are. Is there a little tape glue remaining on the obverse that could be removed without taking a chance on harming the cartwheel on the reverse? Or is the remaining obverse marks something other than tape glue? Can you apply a second acetone treatment to just the obverse or would you?

These are just questions about the limits of conservation and when do you reach a point of diminishing returns. We are all aware that such a point exists.

It would be tricky, and probably pointless -- soaking the reverse in clean acetone for years would have no additional effect on it.

Nice job! I'd still be afraid to do it :)

I'd say slightly above average strike for the date, and you definitely improved it. Does look like an old wipe, but still a decent AU-ish example.

If the cleaned VF-XF coins are getting $175-185, you did well with that one. I'd call it a cleaned AU with decent strike.

I never stop with one acetone bath. It takes two or three to be sure it has removed everything possible. It's not possible for acetone to harm the coin.

I've got the 1921D and 2021D Morgans and the 1921S and 2021S Morgans. The 1921 Morgans are very nice. I've got the 2021 Peace but am having a difficult time finding a decent 1921 Peace. Even the higher priced 1921 Peace Dollars don't look too good. Any suggestions where to look and how much to pay. When the 2021 Peace Dollars came out, the 1921 Peace Dollars prices jumped high in the sky. What would be a reasonable price for the 1921 Peace. I've seen some advertised for around $350 to almost $500. That's crazy, at least for me it is.

@Mark Metzger Good job on removing the tape residue. Your coin is circulated and had been cleaned in the past (as unfortunately most of this mintage that is still being sold as Raw) as evidenced by some hairlines and granularity of the surfaces. Here is one for comparison that I sold which graded AU-58:

AU details cleaned. I would call it a fair looking coin. Should sell around $175 or so.

Not knocking this coin, but I don't believe it should have graded above AU55. JMO.

@longshot Great Collections photos use lighting that washes out the coin--especially silver that still has some original mint luster--and also accentuates all surface marks; this coin looks much better in hand and was accurately graded based upon the minimal amount of wear on the high points.

No argument from me...I know photos often make a coin look different than in hand. Peace.

Au and an old cleaning. I don’t think an additional acetone soak would hurt at all. I often will soak overnight or for a few days with particular tough crud

Just an update on the Peace dollar thread. Decided to put it up on eBay to see what it could fetch. Like all my auctions, I started it at .99 without a reserve. It ended up selling for $355 ($175 purchase price). A tidy little profit! I just purchased another ‘21 which I will post in a new thread.

You were lucky. It was clearly a cleaned AU coin, and you got undamaged price for it. I don’t know whether to congratulate you for a good conservation job, or wonder why you buy obviously cleaned coins, and don’t seem to be learning from the experience. As far as selling a cleaned coin, and passing it off as uncleaned is that honorable or honest? People buy any stuff listed on eBay, and don’t know the difference.

Why would you suggest that I passed this coin off as uncleaned? Did the eBay listing say “uncleaned”? No. I’ve been at this long enough to know that any coin purchased raw has the potential to have been cleaned…these high relief peace dollars especially.

Because you are bragging about it here on the forum. Your activity makes the best case I have ever seen for TPG grading.
