I've got a special treat for everyone today! This majestic specimen is the only know example of a 1977 Washington Quarter struck through by a bayonet. Yep you read that correct, a freaking bayonet! So here's my theory on how this occurred in the mint... See what happened was the Russians (I say Russians because I'm pretty sure it's from a mosin nagant) invaded the Philadelphia mint back in 1977. As you can imagine there was all kinds of commotion and one of the freshly minted bags of quarters was inadvertently stabbed?, skewered?, bayonetted?... Anyway voila, a one of a kind mint error was born. I know what you're thinking, "But Yankee... I don't remember ever reading about that!". That's because it was a government cover up!!! You really think they would admit that the Russians invaded one of our mints?!... As you can see there's not only circulation wear on the quarter but on the bayonet as well so I'm guessing this was in circulation for a while before my dad discovered it since I found it cleaning out one of his many sheds today. Keep an eye on Etsy because you will soon be able to make this unique One of a kind mint error yours for the low price of $14,000,000,000,000.00
In the past, I would go to any shooting range, when not active, and use my metal detector and find such with holes and many disfigurements. The people would not retrieve them. They were just junk silver then.
That wouldn't be an mint error of any kind because it didn't occur during the actual striking of the Quarter.. Just Post Mint(ing) Damage because it occurred after it was struck
Hmm ok. Let me think... Got it! It was double struck in the mint but the second strike just happened to be a bayonet that went through the coin, lol
If you have a nail with a coin on it, it’s an error. The TPG’s have slabbed it. Just have them slab this. Hehehe.
Might be an Error Bayonet. They was making the weapon and the quarter got pressed onto the blade. Making it a retained strike through.
@YankeeDime You should send it to PCGS. As a proud, wise Philadelphian I remember this event. The city was attacked by Amish invading the city in their carriages one day late in the winter of 1977.
1977? Wasn't that the same time ammo sales skyrocketed in Alabama because they heard that Russia invaded Georgia and the Alabama boys said they would never let that happen to Alabama?
MORE LIKE "proof of time travel" man goes back in time to ww1 (or 2, not so proficient on my bayonets) and gets saved, (almost) by aa washington quarter, then somehow makes it back or is discovered,,,,i like time travel...
Waittttt, no one asked the IMPORTANT question. Did you get this in change or out of a quarter roll? (I might have to start checking quarter rolls again)
