Hi all, well as you ll know i'm a seated quarter guy well i have an oppurtunity to buy an 1861 seated quarter graded by NGC as an XF45 however it's $350 about $250 over the current retail price, but there is another HOWEVER. it's attributed to the Jules Reiver collection. so is it worth it for the pedigree? wat do you guys think? -Russ
Interesting question, since I am a novice I would like to see what the pros say about a premium for provenance.
I am a coin collector, not a Jules Reiver collector. To me, the holder is worth next to nothing. If you want to collect slabs, go for it. If you collect coins, why spend the money?
Well at least this reiver coin appears to be accurately graded from what I can see in the small thumbnail. I would not pay that premium for a Reiver coin. Most of the large cents I looked at were overgraded and demanding a premium for that grade. I only own 1 Reiver coin, but I bought it without a premium and inline with other coins of its grade. The same with the Rasmussen coin. If I was you I would skip it or keep waiting - you might find that very same coin in a year without the premium. I also assume the premium is not because of some rare variety.
I think i'm going to pass on it. it would e cool to own but for that price i could pick up a nice AU piece.
nope, not worth the pedigree. I turned down one 'Reiver' quarter a couple of months ago at 25% over list. Nice to have a pedigree, but not that much.
I don't have any price sheets handy, but that sounds like a $100 coin priced at $350. If so, that's a 250% premium. Ouch. No way on God's Green Earth would I pay anywhere near that for anybody's provenance. Occasionally a coin will go for 50% premium (or more) due to exceptional quality, but not pedigree.
I wouldn't pay a premium for a pedigreed coin. I owned the 1932 S Quarter out of the Bass collection. It was an MS65. I sold it for the standard price for a regular MS65 coin.
