Did PCGS screw up grading this coin?

That part hung off the rim and didn't fold over like the error part did. I see now where you guys referenced it.

 

My mistake. I found the slab and it from PCGS. Clearly states first 30 days.

 

All corrected after I found it again.

 

What happened to this Morgan is the same thing that happened to mine. It is a shaving from the rim that was retained by a small crack in the rim edge. Basically it's a strike through. Somehow mine was snapped off during the grading process and now all that is left is the small slice in the rim where the shaving was attached. It received a grade of MS69, but it's back again because they didn't designate it as an error.

Nope I sent in 18 coins all with the First Strike.

You can send in 1 coin and get FS as long as it meets the cutoff date.

 

Well that’s a bummer :/. I was hoping for a Mint error.

 

I don’t think it could ever come back 69 (from PCGS) after being slabbed as 70 by PCGS unless PCGS made a mistake the first time it was graded in which case the “PCGS Guarantee” would kick in and I could demand that they replace my coin with a real MS70 since that’s the grade they originally gave it.

That’s one of the good things about slabs. Even if they are over graded it’s comforting to know that the TPGs will compensate for any mistakes in grading.

 

I am guessing if it came back 69 maybe there is some other flaw?

Because according to PCGS MS70 coins can have minor as minted defects and still receive the 70 grade.

I noticed on my 69s (O, D, Peace) the flaws seems to be a very tiny little nick around the edge of the coins.

 

No First Strike means the coin was delivered within 30 days of initial release.

For PCGS the cutoff date was November 18th so if these coins were submitted to PCGS before then they were eligible for First Strike regardless of grade.

I sent mine in on 11/17 so I just barely got the First Strike designation.

They also charge $18 for it which is ridiculous because the cost to grade a coin is $17 and FS designation is extremely easy since it just requires looking at the date submitted.

I have a question on Grading standards ?
Isn't the field on a coin one of the most important areas for grading .

Other than being fully struck of course ...

 

I think on Morgan Dollars it’s the cheek because that’s the high point and most likely to wear first.

 

Weren't these Morgan's handled with tender loving care at the mints ? Shouldn't be many contact marks on the cheeks at this point in time .

 

Yeah the 2021’s were. I didn’t know you were talking about those I thought you just meant coins in general and that’s the only one I know how the grading works.

I think it’s still the cheek though that’s the most important. Oh and the Eagle on the reverse.

 

I'm sure they Grade these a lot different than business strike coins .. I'm still trying to figure out how a strikethrough in a field, which makes an a imperfection . Graded a MS70 ..

 

PCGS defines MS70 as:



Basically it allows for small defects IF they happened at the Mint. Not post mint damage like if I dropped it.

 

If I was the purchaser of this coin .
I would say it does impact the eye Appeal on the coin . There's a strikethrough in the field .

 

Well I mean technically any imperfection at all affects the eye appeal.

But the coin is exactly as minted. It’s not damage it’s an error.

Like a doubled die coin doesn’t get hurt because of the doubling even though it obviously affects the eye appeal.
