  1. Should this 2003 S Maine Quarter have s mint mark if not a proof? Also should it be silver? I know San Francisco stop putting mint mark on Business coin in 1968.

Its an imparred proof aka heavily circulated and used to look a lot nicer. If there's no brown color around the edge then it's silver yours is obviously clad.

Yes but no situation and actually since 2012 the mint reintroduced business strike quarters minted at the Frisco.Besides the 1976 quarter which they also made a business strike Frisco version.

Yes it was a proof. Once it has circulated, it is an "impaired" proof.
It does not have the value of a proof, but is still collectible because of the
lower mintage. As Potty said starting in 2012, they made Proof S coins AND S coins for circulation. But weren't those circulating S coins only available from the mint in bags and rolls? I don't live very far from SF geographically, I have gone through millions of quarters and I've never gotten any 2012- present S quarters. I've pulled a 72-S in a coin star, a 72-S CRH and a 2004 Wisconsin S proof CRH. All 3 impaired.

San Francisco, prior to 2012, only minted proof coins (in recent history - post '74). Both clad and 90% silver proofs were minted. After 2012, San Francisco has been minting clad proofs, 90% silver proofs (with the exception of last year when it started .999 silver), and clad business strikes.

Here are a few examples I've found CRH'ing:

?Don't know why you posted this but I was reffering to the fact how Michel has never found a single business strike Frisco after searching through millions and then showed my lucky find(look at the link).

I like the Acadia. I was just wondering if the business strike S was put into circulation. My feeling is that "collectors" bought them from the mint, and only released the less desirable ones into circulation. Otherwise, I would assume I would have found 1 in circulation in 10 years.
If "millions" sounds like an exaggeration, a hundred thousand is not.

I'm almost certain that's what happened with the "S" business strikes. Bought by flippers to get the MS70s graded and dumped the rest. I am closing in on a full tube of them now from all my searching.

That's what I thought but I wasn't sure. Which would explain why they
    are hen's teeth.

San Francisco made S mintmarked five cent pieces for circulation in 1968, 69, and 70, one cent pieces 1968 to 1974, and SBA dollars in 1979 and 1980. they have also made circulation quality 1981 S dollars and ATB quarters from 2012 to 2021 but those were not released into circulation, just for sale to collectors.

1.4 million of each of the 5 2012 s business strikes were produced.. ALL were sold in rolls or bags or mint sets directly from the mint.. none were "placed" in circulation at least not by the mint... I myself bought a bag of 100 of each of the 5 2012 BS quarters.. still waiting for them to gain a decent premium lol...
