It can be very hard to narrow your goals for the year down to a single coin, but if I had to do it I'd say I would most like to find: A gold Aureus of Augustus like this one sold at CNG a few years ago: What about You?
If it were something within reach, I certainly wouldn't broadcast my interest here and generate wider interest/competition . In general though... as Doug has often said... the coin I want most is the one I didn't know existed until I saw the listing .
Whatever my wallet says is "Ok, you can swing it this month". Just made my first 2022 purchase thanks to a fellow posters tip. So it's a matter of it arriving.
Fun idea @Aethelred ! "A gold Aureus of Augustus"... ummm, some of us still need proper AR versions! But, I'll share a few coins that I wouldn't kick out of bed. First, there is no rule against upgrading: Next, we are allowed to dream. Who doesn't track coins that you have no "business" tracking.... or something utterly INSANE that you'll rarely ever see, Museum or not: Or just a good little But, as @TIF said, "If it were something within reach, I certainly wouldn't broadcast my interest here and generate wider interest/competition ."
A lifetime Alexander III tetradrachm I nearly bought one last week, but turned out it was a Phoenician issue despite the style being similar to official ones!
I have large list of types I eventually want to add and I don't just search and chase 1 type. I watch as many auctions as I can and bid when I see an example I would be satisfied with at a cost I can justify. Though there are about 5-6 that I very much want to add but I probably couldn't afford to pick them all up in a single year.
When I see an interesting coin (on CoinTalk or wherever) previously unfamiliar to me, or just something I've been meaning to get, often I hop over to Numisbids and enter a brief description (region, city, feature of the coin; something like that) and add it to the Want List Requests. Every week I get an emailed summary of hits in upcoming auctions (you can opt for daily if you wish). I need to edit the list because I have some of the older additions. Looks like I have about 65 coins on the list right now. Some weeks I get very few hits because in general I'm looking for things that don't show up often.
Wow, this is cool. Didn't know this was a feature. I'll definitely have to do that for the top 10 types or so.
Not every auction house is a Numisbids client but it helps reduce time spent browsing. It's fun to pore through auction listings but often I don't have time.
I have less time than I used to to look through them. I always look through the entire catalog of the 5 or 6 major auction houses though for their ancient listings just in case. I've found a few coins I wasn't even looking for that way. I know a couple other places that list other auctions, but I haven't used them as much as I'd like.
While I have a couple of dream types (which I’ll keep close to my chest), it’s so much more about finding specimens. I’ll know what I want when I see it. A great number of coin issues had at least a few spectacular dies/ examples that would make any collector drool. Often there will be a type I ignored as unappealing until something came along to change my perception
Not going to happen, but, I can dream. lol For years I've been wanting a beat up coin of Herod Antipas. (this one is too good for me. I just pulled it off wildwinds.) Erin
Actually you have pretty good chances, recently they show up quite often, and the prices become more reasonable.
I already met one of my long-term goals with my first purchase of the year, and hope to be able to post about it soon. For the rest of the year, I'll know the coins I absolutely have to have when I see them, and fall in love at first sight. I have a want list at Numisbids as well, but the ones that come up usually turn out to be well beyond my means, like the Volteius snake biga and the Cossutius Bellerophon & Pegasus. Really nice examples of each seem to be selling for at least $2,500-$3,000 these days.
I have a handful of targets coming in upcoming auctions but I'm taking a fairly pragmatic approach: if I can add one "keeper" per year, I'm happy.
