My uncle gave me a box of dimes to sell for melt. Are there any dates to set aside? Some are Bu. Thanks
If you have the time besides key dates search for doubled dies, rpms, errors. http://www.varietyvista.com/07 Roosevelt Dimes/index.htm
My advice would be to go through them and look for any errors, such as doubled dies, strikethroughs, die clashes, etc. I'm not aware of any specific dates to be on the lookout for, as I'm more well-versed in errors.
As disappointing as it is, the chances of finding something worth more than current junk silver prices is slim to none. You could look for RPM's/DDOs/DDRs, but that is extremely time consuming and tiring after a while. Even if you find something, there's a relatively small chance of it being worth a larger premium. In my experience the best Roosevelts are toned and high grade.
I'd pull out the BU ones regardless of the dates. Then sort by date/mm and see what you've got. Seems like selling lots with various dates would net you more than melt, but of course that takes time and effort.
If you get some of the tougher dates in high grade like 49-S or 50-S those are worth picking out (if BU). There are a few doubled dies, and there are dozens of CPG recognized RPM varieties. However most of the RPMs generate little interest unless in high grade. If you don’t want to check all the dimes, I’d say at least check the UNCs. PCGS Coinfacts and NGC VarietyPlus are great resources for varieties. Check EVERY 1946-S dime for the very rare Sans Serif variety - it can bring hundreds of $ even circulated. If you find one in UNC, you’ve hit the jackpot as far as Roosevelt varieties go.
I recently filled a Whitman’s album from junk silver, even the tougher dates. I didn’t buy a single coin to the set.
I I don’t have an off-centered Dime but I do have this. An obverse struck thru capped die. Will that work?
I need to get the Cherry Pickers Guide. I looked for any obvious errors, pulled out the BU’s and kept the dates worth slightly more than melt according to the red book. Thanks everyone
Did your uncle advise you whether or not he already went through them? Give your uncle a big hug and a I love you smile, you lucky devil!
make "unsearched rolls, and put an s mint on either side, sell them on ebay fo 120 a roll, they will sell
worth from 25.00 up to 100 or so, i picked up one in vermont )where i register my company vehicles) and paid 40.00 at a junque shop that also had a showcase with coins OH FOgot to mention, i use photogarde grading (pcgs free site) and also numismedia for prices, they are more reasonable than pcgs site, (they are promoting their own product with it)
My uncle had no idea of what to look for. That’s why I got to look through them. He got them from his step son who works at a gas station. Somebody paid with seven rolls of silver dimes. He got them at face value.
