What is so annoying about these pinned posts?

For myself, I would prefer, for CoinTalk to allow discussions about "politics" and "religion". Currently, CoinTalk doesn't allow discussions about "politics" or "religion", except for certain exceptions which seem to be difficult to define.
If I ever owned a coin discussion forum, I would only ban the following persons, and allow anyone to ignore anyone else via an "Ignore" button :
    1. Spammers : People who flood the forum with way too many posts.
    2. Scammers : People who are trying to get money from people in dishonest or unethical ways.
    3. Perhaps there are other people, whom I would ban, but I can't think of any, at the moment.
However, in spite of that, the CoinTalk ancients forum is my favorite ancient coin discussion forum in the USA. The user interface is good, and there are many active members, who are very knowledgeable and friendly.

I'm a mod on another forum and the policy on politics and religion are the same as on CT. We did have a Covid-19 subforum but we shut that down because it always got political.

It's less about the pinned post itself being annoying, and more about the constant reminders that pursuing interesting conversations and tangents can result in paying a price of some kind.

Fully understanding why the topics of discussion need to be so heavily regulated, it still sucks that we have to be on pins and needles when deciding what and how to respond to member statements, and how our posts will be perceived by others (mods in particular). We really lose something when conversation is stifled for the purpose of not offending the person in the room with the most brittle sensibilities.

The spectrum ranges from leaving people to fend for themselves on one end, and catering to the needs of the weak-minded on the other. Unfortunately, the rules as enforced in these forums tend a bit too far toward the latter than would be ideal. It is this aspect that is annoying, the pinned post is just symbolic of the issue.

I don't find that I am on "pins and needles". It's easy...just don't break the rules. No deep thought needed.

Thanks for explaining your point of view.

Considering that this is in the Ancient Coins forum, I stopped myself from making any more childish answers. Get over this everybody and let this thread go into the trash bin of history...NOW QUIT OR I WILL STOP THIS CAR!!!

There's nothing arbitrary about it all. Enforcement of the rules is consistent and totally unbiased. What some apparently don't get is that what "they" think is arbitrary, is not the same thing as what the mods is arbitrary. Put another way, they have different opinions on what breaks the rules and what doesn't. But here's the thing, the membership and or individual members do not get to decide what breaks the rules and what doesn't. Only the mods get to decide that.

As for clarifying the rules, any time you want clarification of the rules, you tell me what rule you want clarified and I'll happily and gladly clarify it for you.

OK. Please clarify "offensive." In my world, Nazis are a heck of a lot more offensive than is consensual adult sex, but it seems the owners of this board disagree.

Please also clarify "political." Angry bashing of the USPS in general and postal unions in particular-- a favorite target of the American far-right-- is intensely "political," yet such posts are routinely permitted here.

    Thank you.

That's not asking for clarification of a rule Phil. You're merely voicing your opinion about what you find offensive, and what you think constitutes political discussion, and that's all you're doing. And as I clearly said above in the post directly above yours, you don't get to decide what's offensive and or political. To put it another way - your opinion does not matter and you have no say in the matter.

And what's more, this is precisely what it says about that kind of thing in the forum rules, item 8 -

Therefore, it will be up to the sole discretion of the Coin Talk Administrators and Moderators as to what constitutes a permissible discussion on these subjects – period.

In other words, it comes down to "you know it when you see it," which is another way of saying "personal whim" "Personal whim" is literally part of the definition of "arbitrary." Since I have never even remotely hinted that my opinion does or should "matter" here, I do wonder why it's so important to boldly assert your authority ad infinitum?

For the record, one last question, what do you think the majority of members here find more offensive: Nazis or consensual sex?

I would venture to say that I'm as anti-Nazi as anyone here, if not more so, but the example you gave of what's offensive here was the permitted posting of coins issued in the Third Reich. I would never collect them myself, but I'm not particularly offended by Nazi coins and stamps, even though of course they're inherently propagandistic. Certain other kinds of Nazi memorabilia are indeed offensive to me, but I've never seen that kind of thing here. So it isn't as if "Nazis" in general are allowed here, whereas numismatic portrayals of consensual sex are not. (And I've seen plenty of nudity on ancient coins posted here, including ithyphallic examples!)

Probably because you keep expressing your opinion about what is offensive.

Considering the Supreme Court used the "I know it when I see it" affirmation means some things are contextual, and absent context impossible to resolve independently. Also, I support banning erotic images but not a swastika. One is obviously not meant for youngsters to see in our culture, while the other takes education why it stood for pathetic and reprehensible ideals. Plus, us on this board are aware its not the swastika, an honored human mark, that is to blame for Nazism, just like the color red and a hammer and sickle themselves are not to blame for the tens of millions of death under Stalin. Apples and oranges, and against the general backdrop of the race to the lowest common denominator on the internet, family friendly pictures are pleasant to be around.

Here's a simple rule that comprehensively covers every potential topic of discussion and eliminates opinion-based decision making from the equation:

"If, for whatever reason, something bothers you.... then stop reading it."

    Problem solved! You're welcome!! :angelic:

    So where do I find:
    (a) "The Rules"
    (b) Thread tools

    @JohnnyC Here you go :
    (a) To find the CoinTalk rules, look near the top of this page, at which you are currently looking. Where it says "Home>Forums>Coin_Forums>Ancient_Coins>", click on "Forums>". In the resulting page, the 2nd forum from the top is called "The Rules". Click on that forum, to see the CoinTalk rules.
    (b) To find Thread Tools, look near the top of this page, at which you are currently looking. Just below the thread title, way over to the right, it says "Thread Tools", with a down arrow next to that. Click on, or hover the mouse over, the "Thread Tools". In the drop down menu, there is only one option, which is "Ignore Thread".

The glorification of Nazi history via coins (or user names, IMHO) is very offensive. I believe that is what @Volodya is referring to.

I certainly agree with that proposition, but haven't seen what you're referring to on Coin Talk.

    John Skelton Morgan man!

Neither have i. Talking about Nazi coins is within the purview of CoinTalk, and no glorification is intended, just simple numismatic interest.
