20th Century Circulating Coins

I've been collecting coins for nearly half a century. As a kid, I use to search through my coins looking to fill holes in my coin books while also looking for error coins and rarities. Thus, I tended to collect circulating coins from the 20th century. I was reading a thread on this website about the total number of 20th century coins. I heard answers that seemed to suggest about 1300 coins. As this website is pretty good, I started looking around for a total list of 20th century circulating coins. Not only couldn't I find it on this website but on the internet in general. Although it is probably out there, I've decided to complete the exercise myself. I used Krause's 33rd eddition of World Coins (1901 to present) as well as the internet as my references. Based on my research (see attached pdf copy of my Excel file), I ended with a count of 1,224 circulating coins. If you want the excel file itself, please let me know and I'll send it to you. I couldn't figure out how to upload an Excel file on this site. As I was creating the list, I realized that I needed rules that I've listed below. I encourage comments and disagreements and will consider additions or deletions to the list based on your validated suggestions. Here are my assumptions:
    (1) I count only 20th century U.S. circulating coins (1901 - 2000).
    (2) I include the following coin series as limited by the above dates: IHC, Lincoln Cents, V nickels, Buffalo nickels, Jefferson nickels, Barber dimes, Mercury dimes, Roosevelt dimes, Barber quarters, Standing Liberty quarters, Washington quarters, State quarters, Barber half dollars, Liberty Walking half dollars, Franklin half dollars, Kennedy half dollars, Morgan dollars, Peace dollars, Ike dollars, SBA dollars, and Sacagawea dollars.
    (3) I exclude error coins, date varieties, mint mark varieties. etc. Some key examples includes the three legged Buffalo, 1955 DDO cent, 1960 and 1982 small and large date cents, 1945 Mercury dime micro S, and many date overstrikes.
    (4) I include metal changes during a year such as the 1982 cent and 1942 war nickel.
    (5) I include intentional changes to the die such as the 1909 VDB cents, 1913 buffalo nickels, 1917 standing liberty quarters, and 1917 walking liberties.
    (6) I exclude any coins manufactured only in mint sets, special mint sets, proof sets, or silver proof sets.
    (7) I excludes all commemorative coins, gold coins, and silver eagles.
    (8) I exclude mint rarities that weren't really meant for "prime time" including such things as the 1913 V-nickel, 1964 Peace dollar, and the 1943 copper cent.
    (9) I have included difficult coins to get such as the 1909-S VDB cent, 1916-D Mercury dime, and the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter.
    (10) I have included the all state quarters from P & D mints from 1999 and 2000.

I'm now only 70 coins away from a 20th century "minted for circulation" coin set. I'm working on barber half dollars at the moment, especially with the low cost of silver. The last 20 will be really hard but I need something for the bucket list.

I'm now down to 30 coins to complete my self described "20th century minted for US circulation" type set. My wife just purchased the attached 1902-S Morgan for $150 from USA Coin Book (Hollywood, CA). She's a great woman! They graded it as VF but I'm thinking F-12 with a value of $120. What are your thoughts?

I'm now down to 19 coins left in my 20th century coins minted for circulation "type set". I've just finished the 20th century Barber half dollars with the purchase of the 1914 and 1915 over the past month. Although they are quite rare, they weren't too bad on my budget at least for grades between VG and Fine. I'm down to 8 SLQ's, 4 BQ's, 1909-S VDB cent, 1912-S V-nickel, 1913-S v2 Buffalo nickel, 1916-D Mercury dime, 1921 and 1921-D Walkers, and the 1903-O Morgan. It is starting to get quite expensive!

Nothing to add but I don’t meet many “Ham” last names with one M - I am a Ham myself. Nice to meet you!

Nice to meet you Tyler. As my dad would say, the Hamm's with 2 M's were kicked out of the family and forced to take another M:)

I purchased a 1917-S Type 1 SLQ this week on the bay. I'm now down to 17 coins to finish my 20th Century US Coin Circulating set. Do you think that a little acetone could help this coin make an AU grade?

My daughters got me a 1921-D Liberty Walking Half Dollar for Christmas. It completes by Walker collection. I'm now down to 13 coins to finish my 20th century coin circulating set. I'm guessing its grade at VG-8. What are your thoughts?

Here is a 1914 Walker!!! However the US Mint says and I believe it has obviously an altered real Walker .... probably a 1934.

I bought it in a roll and thought I had a 1914 Barber ..... next day realized it was a Walker. Why alter to a date that never existed?

    Well they must have!

Nice circulation set. I would grade that walker as good, not very good. My reason being no feathers on the eagle and more importantly, no skirt lines visible. Just my opinion but I am a very conservative grader.

I can't disagree with you. I would probably grade it a G-4 too. I've given it a little upgrade considering its a Walker and has a strong date and a good mint mark. It seems they get a little better grade than some other series. The seller suggested a Fine grade but it definitely doesn't rise to that occasion.

And running; it never gets old to me. I can't believe that I'm down to just 13 coins to reach my bucket list dream.

Not even close to fine. Hopefully your daughters got it at the correct price or better.

I think they did pretty well. They got it for $299 plus $10 shipping and handling.
