In ex. [ASIS] I hope everyone else is having a Merry Christmas.
Great last coins of the year, I find the Licinii (is that correct?) of particular interest as I have not seen that type before. Now I need one.
It’s one of the “tails” that this coin was issued by Domitianus I have a few others Licinius I & Licinius II A.D. 320- 321 22mm 3.4g DD NN IOVII LICINII INVICT AVG ET CAES; laureate and draped confronted busts, together holding Victory on globe with wreath in each hand. I O M ET VICT CONSERV D D N N AVG ET CAES; Victory stg. r. palm branch in l, hand, offering wreath to Jupiter stg. l., chlamys across left shoulder, holding sceptre. In ex. SMKΔ RIC VII Cyzicus 13 Licinius I & Licinius II A.D. 318 21mm 4.2g D D N N IOVII LICINII INVICT AVG ET CAES; laureate and draped confronted busts, together holding trophy of arms. I O M ET VIRTVTI DD NN AVG ET CAES; Jupiter stg. Left, chlamys across l. shoulder, leaning on scepter, in front of trophy, at foot of which two captives are seated on either side. In ex. SMATB RIC VII Antioch – This coin was listed in RIC VII as Heraclea 50 by Bruun, because he thought the mintmark read SMHTA instead of SMATA. This error was addressed by Pierre Bastien in his article “Coins with a Double Effigy Issued by Licinius at Nicomedia, Cyzicus, and Antioch.” NC 13 (1973) : 87. It’s my newest favorite DAFNE...at least until my next one,
Victor Clark, by coincidence, DHL delivered mine on the same day as yours: CARTHAGE. Second Punic War. Shekel (Circa 215-201 BC). Obv: Wreathed head of Tanit left. Rev: Horse walking right; long caduceus in background. MAA 91; SNG Copenhagen 327. Condition: Very fine. Weight: 8.40 g. Diameter: 22 mm. Another addition to my Carthaginian family. I haven't come across all that many with a caduceus on the reverse but I did purchase another version of the coin with a caduceus. Thanks for the post.
I collect the DAFNE by RIC number, but also look for interesting variations. Constantine I A.D. 328 21mm 3.3g CONSTANTINVS MAX AVG; head with rosette diademed, looking up to heavens CONSTANTINIANA DAFNE; Victory seated l. on cippus, palm branch in left hand and laurel branch in right hand, looking r.; trophy at front, at the foot is a kneeling captive with head turned being spurned by Victory, E in left field. in ex. CONS RIC VII Constantinople 32 Constantine I A.D. 328 Ӕ nummus 21mm 3.2g Anepigraphic: diademed head, looking up to heavens CONSTANTINIANA DAFNE; Victory seated l. on cippus, palm branch in left hand and laurel branch in right hand, looking r.; trophy at front, at the foot is a kneeling captive with head turned being spurned by Victory; A in left field. in ex. CONS RIC VII Constantinople— For some reason Bruun did not include this type in RIC, though it was noted by earlier numismatists. Constantine I A.D. 328 Ӕ nummus 21mm 3.4g CONSTANTINVS MAX AVG; diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. CONSTANTINIANA DAFNE; Victory seated l. on cippus, palm branch in left hand and laurel branch in right hand, looking r.; trophy at front, at the foot is a kneeling captive with head turned being spurned by Victory; Z in left. in ex. CONS RIC VII Constantinople 35 Constantine I A.D. 328 Ӕ nummus 20mm 3.7g CONSTANTINVS MAX AVG; diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right, with left shoulder raised up (possibly an adlocutio). CONSTANTINIANA DAFNE; Victory seated l. on cippus, palm branch in left hand and laurel branch in right hand, looking r.; trophy at front, at the foot is a kneeling captive with head turned being spurned by Victory; Δ in left. in ex. CONS RIC VII Constantinople 35 var.
Really nice coins Victor The Constantine I are amazing. Did you get dinged by customs? Everytime Naumann send my coins via DHL express/ I end up paying 13% customs
I mentioned above I received a coin from Naumann delivered by DHL on Christmas Eve day. I did not receive a customs charge.
That is amazing! Here in Canada, anything that is delivered via DHL/ FEDEX/ UPS is scutinized by our customs. Since there is an invoice...thus a 13 % HST is charged/ plus $15 fee for their efforts i making life miserable for us
