Well I usually post a year-end top 10 but I didn't do one last year, so how about a top 25 to catch up? I couldn't narrow it down to 20. Hungary 1687 Gilt Bronze Coronation Jeton of Joseph I as King of Hungary (30mm) Joseph I was only 9 years old at the time. I have since picked up an example in both silver and bronze, but this one is my favorite on eye appeal. Hungary 1782B AR József II Tallér KM-395.1 (1781-1783) PCGS MS63 This coin is currently crossing to NGC awaiting a grade. Hungary 1848 AU Dukát KINGDOM KM-425 (1837-1848) NGC MS62 It took me years to find a suitable example of the 1848 Kingdom type of this ducat, to complete my set of the three Hungarian ducat types of 1848. Hungary 1855B AR 20 Kreuzer KM-2211 (1852-1856) NGC MS65 A stunning example from the Austrian Occupation of Hungary (1849-1867). This is technically an Austrian type, but it was struck at a Hungarian mint, so Hungarian collectors consider it to be a Hungarian issue. Hungary 1867A AR Franz Joseph I. Hungarian Coronation Jeton Mont. 2712 (20mm) Latin Legends MS65+ NGC It's extremely difficult to find examples of FJI's coronation jetons above an MS63, so I was thrilled to pick up a gorgeous 65+. Hungary 1869KB AR Forint KM-449 (1868-1869) Gorgeous irridescent toning that really captures the imagination in hand. This coin is currently with NGC. Hawaii 1883 AR Kalākaua I Quarter KM-5 (1883) VAM-10 Comet ANACS MS62 (Struck at the San Francisco Mint.) I picked this up as a souvenir when my wife and I went to Hawaii. It's currently with NGC. Hungary 1888KB AR 10 Krajczár KM-451 (1870-1888) NGC MS66 I bought this in a PCGS MS66 slab and it crossed to NGC at the same grade. These photos don't do it justice but the rainbow toning is phenomenal in hand and in my opinion, star worthy. Austria 1892 AU 20 Corona KM-2806 (1892-1905) NGC MS62 PL A beautiful proof-like first year example of both the 20 corona type and denomination.
Hungary 1894KB Nickel 10 Fillér KM-482 (1892-1914) Chain Strike Edge with Struck Coin, 15% Off Center This coin was struck out of collar adjacent to a coin that had been struck in the collar that imparted the inverse of the reeded edge. This coin is currently with NGC Errors. This is a common type, but errors from this period are extremely scarce, especially ones this major. Hungary 1896 Gilt Hungarian Millennium Exposition Gilt Medal 28x33mm, 8.0g A stunning gilt proof-like medal commemorating the Millennium Expo of 1896. Hungary 1896 Bronze Hungarian Millennium Expo Grand Medal of Outstanding Merit 85mm I have a significant collection of Millennium Expo items (not just coins and medals), but this medal was one of the most challenging to find an example of for my collection. By far the largest of the three Millennium Expo awards, the Grand Medal of Outstanding Merit was only awarded to very few people who made major contributions to the Expo, and as such, all of them have a provenance belonging to someone of renown. Awarded to the artist Kallós Ede for his sculptures provided for the Millennium Expo pavillion. He was an extremely gifted and prolific sculptor. Perhaps his most notable work for the Millennium Expo was the Millennium Memorial that resides today in Ópusztaszer National Historical Memorial Park in Budapest. Austria 1901 AR Corona KM-2804 (1892-1907) NGC MS65 This particular blue gem was one I had been looking for for a number of years after seeing it in an old auction. I jumped on it when it came up for sale. Hungary 1905KB AU 20 Korona KM-486 (1892-1915) NGC MS63★ PL An absolutely outstanding proof-like 20 korona well deserving of the star, and a centerpiece of my Hungarian proof-like set. Austria 1908 AR Corona 60 Years of Reign Commemorative KM-2808 (1908) NGC MS67 x2 Not just one but a pair of gorgeous MS67 coronas. MS67 is an extremely tough grade to find for any date of this denomination. Hungary 1915KB Iron 10 Fillér KM-496 (1915-1918) Broadstruck This wartime issue wasn't struck until 1917 using an older worn 1915 obverse die from the previous type. A scarce broadstruck example that is currently with NGC.
RSFSR 1921АГ AR Ruble Y#84 (1921-1922) NGC MS63 An attractive first-year example of the silver ruble under the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. USSR 1924ПЛ AR Ruble Y#90.1 (1924) NGC MS65 A lovely gem example of this early Soviet ruble. Hungary 1933BP AR 2 Pengő KM-511 (1929-1939) NGC MS67 An absolutely stunning coin in hand with booming luster and irridescent toning. I have since crossed this to NGC as an MS67. US 1964 AR Museum of Atomic Energy Neutron Irradiated Dime Aaron Lujan hand carved this "hobo nickel" on a 1964 irradiated silver dime. Hungary 1977BP AR 200 Forint (Hungarian National Museum 175th Anniversary) Pattern EME18 (1977) Próbaveret This is an unreleased pattern version of the 1977 commemorative 200 forint. This is the proposed business strike version, but I picked this up as a pair with the proof version of this pattern as well. Both are currently with NGC. Hungary 1992BP SZ Copper 10 Forint Pattern Adamo FT6 (1992) A proposed design submitted for consideration for the revised coinage of 1992. This design was struck both in copper and silver at the little-known Szeged mint (SZ). Hungary 2001BP AR 3,000 Forint (A Thousand Years of Hungarian Coinage) KM-752 (2001) Proof An absolutely beautiful design commemorating Hungarian coinage. The companion gold issue was one of my top picks for 2019. This coin is currently at NGC. Hungary 2019BP Bi-Metallic (Copper-Nickel-Zinc/Copper-Nickel-Zinc) 100 Forint Pattern Adamo F12.3 (2019) Próbaveret 2019 saw a composition change for the Hungarian 100 forint. This is the plate coin for the Hungarian Adamo catalog for this pattern. Only 6 examples were made available by the Hungarian Mint for private purchase.
Awesome group of Hungarian items! And I liked the Hawaii, USSR, and Irradiated Dime sprinkled in (being a Hobo makes it even cooler). I hadn't seen one before, but the 2001 modern proof commemorating 1000 years of Hungarian coinage is a coin that struck me as very impressive as well (beautiful design indeed).
Thanks. I would say the coinage millennium proofs are without a doubt my favorite Hungarian modern non-circulating commemoratives. Here are both coins in the set side by side: Hungary 2001BP AR 3,000 Forint Commemorating A Thousand Years of Hungarian Coinage KM-752 (2001) Proof Hungary 2001BP AU 20,000 Forint Commemorating A Thousand Years of Hungarian Coinage KM-753 (2001) Proof NGC PF69 ULTRA CAMEO
Nice top 25 Jaelus I find the coinage struck by the Austro-Hungarian Empire/ Holy Roman Empire as really awesome in their designs/ workmanship. My fav. is that Bohemia AV 100 Dukaten 1629/ where Ferdinand II had a special three coin series (100/50/40 AV Dukaten) struck for his son's future coronation as Ferdinand III Holy Roman Emperor. Here is one of my to compliment your stunning additions. Transylvania AV Quarter Dukat ND Karlsburg Mint HRE Karl VI 1712-42
A great Transylvanian piece. I always request that NGC slab coins as Transylvania over another attribution when there are multiple possibilities.
Thanks Jaelus My modest collection is now at 984 AV coins/ 300+ AR coins. My collection spans 27 centuries/ most 90 percent are FDC/MS I find the TPG system has many flaws/ one they do not have full description/ this is esp. true for PGGS slabs. Then, I find their grading system (hammered coinage) very lax. I have seen where Kunker has a NGC graded coin MS-66/ Kunker downgrade it to a fast st. (AU) The Canadian grading firm CCCS seems to grade along UK/ European standards. Here is a 1/6 Dukat from Breslau
I am trying to get a FDC 1848 "Revolution" AV Dukat/ these are common in EF but hard to find perfect quality.
A 63 like yours would be great. Very nice Ferdinand V 1848 Here is my 1848 4 Dukaten from Wien Mint I got this coin from Spink Auction for $5000 US + fees. Coin is perfect as they described it/ no marks/ handling. The portrait makes him look a lot more youthfull then his true appearance.
