1939 Jefferson Nickel Guesstimation of Grade? Reverse of 1940?

I have a 1939 Jefferson Nickel that looks to me like the reverse of 1940 but I was wanting to get a second opinion to be sure in case if I am wrong. I am also hoping that you kind fellows will give me a Guesstimation of its grade? Thank you, your help is very much appreciated

MS-65 ?? I like it. Pretty clean except for a few distracting marks and nice steps on reverse. The Obverse is also very nice!

It's reverse of 40. The more common reverse for that year. Sharper staircase rails that stand out from the stairs, sharper steps, bigger top step that looks like a porch almost.

 

Agreed Rev of 40 and I’m at 65 too with the possibility of FS. Nice coin.

I have a question....I have a few coins that look similar to this 1939 Nickel, and by the way, that coin looks Beautiful...But my question is, notice at the bottom of the Obverse, bottom of "IN GOD" and under the collar and shoulder...It appears to look like paint brush swipes. Like I mentioned I have a few coins that look just like that, and have a few cents that have thin lines from the top of the coin to the bottom. Most of them are in the 60's and 70's but they look brand spankin new. ???

Nice 39 nickel, and nice 40 reverse. I say MS65 .

 

I'm wondering where the dividing line is to decipher between what is FS and what is not? Is it a guess? Does it depend on the population reports for each year and mint? I've always thought that there are to be no planchet marks, divisions or separations and that the steps are to be crisp and clean. PCGS will just give a FS designation while NGC designates either 5 or 6 FS. When I search thru FS slabbed Jefferson nickels, many of them do not look to me like they have FS according to those guidelines. Any help in gaining some more understanding of this is very much appreciated

Indeed, closer to "a guess" (or a coin toss) than not, and largely agree with your "FS...guidelines" observation...but what a can of worms on this specific FS issue (unknowingly...not to worry), plus with grading in general. Just be sure to add one more step than there actually is (that you see) in the count...if you see/count 4 or 5 full steps, just add 1 to make 5 or 6, etc..."it's just the way it's done" is what I've gleaned from the expert(s), despite not understanding the common-sense rationale for doing so. As for the step interruptions, some TPGs and some graders within TPGs accept certain dings and contact marks within steps for a FS grade...and some don't...on some (but not all) steps. It's an opinionated/interpretative thing...one grading service/grader/day/nickel/coin to another...as with all grading. Not unlike Forrest Gumps's box of chocolates..."you never know what you're going to get next"...or like the veritable "crap-shoot." Anyway, a nice Jeff for sure...with luster should easily go 64, maybe 65 and FS.
