after hoarding around $800 in copper cents and finding around $5 in wheats finally found a 1943 steel wheat, they made millions of these but why are they hard to find?? this coin held up pretty well for the years , no rust and it turned a darker grey

Funny, when I was a kid I used to think those were lead pennies because of the war stories my folks would tell about the scarcity of metals and having to go around picking up scrap metal for the war effort. So all this time I thought they were made from lead but they are steel & zinc ?
I got a handful of them and they are all blackened and pitted with corrosion.

    Happy Hunting !

Over the christmas holidays I hid a dozen steel cents in a wal-mart and placed 6 outside on the walkway. If you figure out which wal-mart it is you may find one, probably gone though...
