I went to all the local banks i could find today searching to get some halves rolls. Every single bank either looked at me like I asked for Gold certificates or said something such as "we never get those in" so what banks in particular do you goto to get halves? My JFK halves collection is weak at best so random rolls will do my dansco albums good, but i don't know where to look. I can try a broader search of banks but i dont feel like wasting gas to have the teller look at me funny like hes never seen or heard of the mystery half dollar
I live in a small town of less that 2,000 people but we have seven banks in town and they all seem to have an endless supply of Kennedy rolls, they don't stock new issues so i usually receive nothing newer than than the early 90's and they are always more than happy to get rid of them.So i would suggest trying a bank in a less populated area if possible.
Just keep expanding your search of banks, and I am sure you will find one that has them. I had to ask at several banks until I found my source. Good luck! TC
You may need to ask if they will order a box for you. If you do, you will probably be on the hook for the entire $500, but after searching them, you turn them back in and you will recover you money. If you do this, I highly recommend you dump your coins a different bank than where you received them. Many banks will order this for you. Some, will not. Good luck.
One thing that may help also is check when they have an armored truck in to pick up. If you try right after a pick up your chances will be close to zero. And be patient they aren't turned in every day, smile, and thank them for looking even if they don't have any.
im always sure to be nice, im definitely not going to go "AWW ya know what!? you guys are useless!!!" haha i thank them for looking if the looked and walk out. Ill definitely try HSBC. I dont care if theyre only as recent as the early 90's i think i have 5 or 6 halves from the 70's 3 or 4 from the 80's and a couple proofs so about an entire roll or so would go right into the album if theyre nice enough condition.
It would probably NOT be a good idea though to ask when the armored truck comes to do a pick up. Might make the bank officers nervous and may get you some unwanted scrutiny from the police.
Good point, especially since they already think something is wrong with you because you asked for rolled coins. :smile Two strikes...
Several years ago when I visited Las Vegas I always get my rolls from the cashier stating I was going to play the 50 cent slots. Always got them there, many Uncs. Don't know where you live if you are close to casino's or gaming joints but I know most have them. Just tip the cashier, if they accept.
I've posted this picture before, but about one year ago, I went to my local bank. About once a month, I would ask for a roll of Kennedy halves. Well this time, the teller comes back and shows me the roll and says it looks like there might be something interesting in this roll. See the picture. Unfortunately, the Walker was it and it was a 1943 or 1944 - so nothing special. But I was having a minor heart attack as I walked out of the bank......
I agree with Krispy. Let your fingers do the walking. Also don't just focus on silver - pull out the gemmy looking Kennedy's too!
Some GPS devices will show you where banks are . I rotate banks/areas and usually cover a 100 mile radius every month or so.
LOVE that pic Pocket Change. And I LOVE it when the end coin is something good like that. I can totally relate to the minor heart attack you were having as you walked out of the bank. I love that rush!
Couple months ago I had a teller tell me they had a new policy that rolls of coins were only for account holders. I said I had one once, closed it in 1980 because of another one of their annoying policies. I'm seriously considering opening a new account at 1stBank, though, I've gotten most of my state quarters there the last ten years. (without an account)
Bank down the street from my work is ordering 3 boxes every two weeks to keep up with my habit of taking out $250 every day I have some free time (3x a week) and they're being really nice about it. The one teller that is always around when I roll in is a stunner, too, and she seems to actually accept that I'm not crazy, just looking to make a little extra money in my spare time. TD Bank ftw.
Obviously not the same rules everywhere. In my area banks no longer carry halves at all. Bank of America now told me they have a policy not to hold any halves taken in from customers and they will all be sent out to the Federal Researve. No one that is not a customer, nor even customers can order halves any more. No loose or rolled haves are to be kept for any reason and any teller found holding some for anyone would be grounds for dismissal. I found this to be true at Chase banks in my area also. I've got accounts in five different banks, some small and some large and all say the same. At Bank of America they also no longer will take bulk coins nor give them out without a buisness address and account. If anyone does bring in loose or rolled coins, they will be sent out for counting to a central location. The amount will be entered into your account minus the fee for that service. No account? They will send you a check minus an additional fee for that service also. If these policies have not yet been implimented in your area, check. Soon they will be standard almost everywhere. Mostly this is all due to several reasons. For the halves, no one used them except collectors and they just look through them and try to return them for free. Many people now roll thier coins and play the one coin short roll system. Banks know this so all rolls are now counted prior to payouts. Bulk coins in bags also contain foreign coins, tokens, washers, etc. and banks know this also. As long as people do these things, coins from banks will soon be a thing of the past.
