Wow, that's a museum tier list. For me, the stone of Elagab wins. It's a coin of such high and specific historical import and fully corroborates the claims of the historians who disparaged his religious practices. Vindex a close second, I had no idea he minted a coin!
Thanks everyone, for replying and voting, very kind of you! It seems that Vindex is the winner, so to say, with the Sextus Pompey coming in second. Below you may find the coins that for various reasons didn't make it on the list. Deciding between this one, and the other Octavian denarius, was very difficult. In the end, I chose for the other one, with the arch on the reverse. I did a write up about this one. I had this type on my want list for a long time. I went for this one, because of the detailed reverse: the lines of the stones, the doors, the garland. All very lovely. I did not make it on my list, because I chose the add the Nero denarius with the Vesta temple reverse. It was a difficult decision. I like the portrait of Nerva on this denarius. Nicely detailed, with hair that seems as curley as the earlier portraits of Marcus Aurelius, many years later. The handshake on the reverse is nicely proportionately engraved too. Still, it didn't make it on the list. A travel series denarius that I was missing. It goes well with the others, and I'm only missing Italia to complete a set all provinces in silver. Although I like these coins, I'm not chosing to spend a high premium on high quality issues. I like the reverse of this one too, but because of the overall wear and because it's part of a set, it individually did not make it on my list. I had serious difficulty not adding this to the list. The portrait is magnificent, it's an unpublished bust type, and the reverse commemorates a historical event which makes it all the more special. My decision was made because overall the other coins that did make it on my list were simply just a bit more special. I did do a small write up about this coin. Unique, but many coins of PN are unique. I got this one for a fair price, and since I want the series of the civil war of 193-194, this one was a must. The ear-wax is an extra bonus. Alone, it's not that special to add it to my top 10, and it deserves to be posted together with the other main characters of 193-194, after I've acquired Didius Julianus some day... I did do a small write up. What can be said about PN above, can be applied to this coin of Clodius Albinus too. Except it's not unique, and lacks the ear wax. Coins of CA as emperor are more scarce than CA as caesar. It comes to it's full potential together with the other guys of 193-194. I did not decide to add it to my top10. A lovely portrait of an emperor I did not have in my collection. Lovely portrait, lovely toning, but in comparison to my other coins in my top 10, not that special. I cherish this coin. I always wanted a coin of Syracus, with the nymph Arethusa on it, since I visited the fountain of Arethusa. It's a fine coin, most details are visible, and it's my second Greek coin. Overall lack of quality made me decide not to add it to my top 10. Silly me ...
All of these are fantastic coins, but the amount of detail on the Scylla reverse of your Pompey denarius is just stunning. You obviously had a fantastic collecting year!
I would have voted for all of them, but as we should choose only 3, my favorites are: Pompey, Octavian and Vindex
How to choose three favorites from these 10 stunners! They are all historically important. Like everyone, I chose the Sextus Pompey. I also gave the Claudius sestertius and Nero denarius some love because they are lovely coins, with excellent eye-appeal. You had a great year. I hope 2022 treats you just as well.
Don't get me wrong. I merely said I have trouble photographing the knife, because of some black deposits next to it. Somehow the photo makes it look like the knife is not fully on it, and it doesn't stand out. Which is unfortunate, because in hand it's clearly visible and lovely detailed. It must be my bad photography skills.
Wow!! My favorites; Sextus Pompey - This one is high on my list! Yours is beautiful. Stone of Emesa - Another on my wish list. Nice! Claudius denarius - Yet another on my want list. I’m sensing a pattern here... of excellent coin taste! Great list and great year Limes! I hope 2022 leaves you more time for coining around.
