I've signed up to do an Engravers presentation about Pablo in April. I've been doing research for my presentation and have found lots of items that were engraved by Baldwin but information about Baldwin himself is rather scarce. I do not have "The Engraver's Line" by Hessler and would rather not have to purchase a copy right now. I do not think that the ANA Library has one but I'll double check by contacting them vs. searching the catalog. My local library cannot borrow a copy. My question is simply this. Does the Engraver's Line book contain information about Mr. Baldwin or just about his engravings? I guess a second question is does anyone have any ideas about sources of info. I've tried the "Encyclopedia of Engravers and Artists" and the "Guide to American Artists". No luck in either. Thanks, Art
Have you also tried local college libraries? USF has an extensive library system for all of their schools that you might try to find a copy at if you are near enough to a campus. I'll try to look up the name in my copy of the book but it might take me a while as I'm still learning to navigate the references in the book itself.
Art: Indeed the book provides a general synopsis of all Engravers Listed. Finding info is the hard part, I suppose that why Mr. Hessler spent all those years putting these books together. Let me know when you are ready for a copy and we can get it for you. And as far as "Pablo" is concerned, I have a new found special feeling for that vignette..it is indeed a Masterpiece. :thumb: Cant wait to read your presentation. Regards, RickieB
Thanks to all the great folks here for their help. I'm hoping to have a copy of Mr. Hessler's book pretty quickly. It appears to be a wonderful reference work. Researching for Pablo is fun. From what I can tell the vignette has been used on tons of stock certificates, an MPC, the 1901 Ten dollar note, a 30 cent stamp from 1923 and I don't know what else. Seems like they got their fair mileage out of that engraving.
Art: What a story that engraving has behind it...as mentioned, cant wait to read your presentation. RickieB
Here's an interesting "Souvenir Card" of Vignettes I picked up with the Bison. These were also printed in green and possibly other colors: CCCC
CT has been find of funky this morning, sorry if that image is displaying double, I've tried to edit it but it's stuck there for now, if you are seeing double.
eBay! for about $10 (not more than $15) seller name: rebcorp search "souvenir card" They have many from ANA, FUN and other past shows.
Another eBay Seller whom I have picked these up from is: deereclassic This is the same vignette currently for sale in green $7.99
Hey guys, perhaps Art is planning a nice presentation on Pablo, and would prefer not to have "previews" of everything he's planned popping up in this thread? Just a thought, Dave
The Bison I posted above was from this card blown-up with macro lens,SO cards are great for that !I also PMed him the rest of what I had.
I thank everyone for all the good info and pictures. It's a big help. I've ordered the Engravers' Line book from Mr. Hessler via RickieB (thanks to both). I'm trying to find examples of Pablo on stock certificates and the like. This may or may not happen. I do have the vignette in the other forms I mentioned. One of the things that I'm looking for is the a copy of the painting that was the inspiration for Pablo. No luck on that yet but I have quite a few resources left to tap. I will say that I was pushing my presentation way out when I picked a date. Now I'm not sure that I'll have much spare runway on this one. Again - thanks for the help. It's all appreciated.
