Dear Severus,

Like you I am a cancer survivor. I have had two incidences; testicular at age 28 and in my 60s a number of basal cell removals. I feel for you and what you and your family are dealing with and I admire your strength in facing it. I am heartened to read that there therapies that might work for you. Be strong and keep looking forward.

I am so sorry to hear this bad, sad news, @Severus Alexander In October my dad was diagnosed with bladder cancer and he is facing surgery next week, and is also on an experimental immunotherapy trial. That's been pretty rough going for my family, but he is in his 80s. That you are dealing with this at your age is just not fair. As others have noted in this post, the medical profession is doing some remarkable things with cancer treatment.

Thank you for sharing your story - it was brave of you. You have a good attitude; I am glad to hear you are going to continue collecting coins. They can be very therapeutic.

Always keep in mind you have many friends here (some of us you've never met in person!). I'll be thinking of you.

I'm sorry to hear that friend, you will be in my thoughts. I always get great pleasure from your knowledgeable and friendly posts, and I hope that they continue for a long time yet.

 

Contact the University of Michigan medical center. My oldest brother went to them with metasticized melanoma and they gave him five good years, and this was over 20 years ago. Lord knows what advances they have made since then.

I read the thread last night , I am so sorry to hear about this , wishing you good health and rapid recovery with the new treatment ! I tried this morning to find a coin depicting a fighter, I think is a good example '' Hercules' fight with the Nemean lion''

As part of his sentence ordered by Hera, Hercules had to perform twelve Labors, feats so difficult that they seemed impossible. One of the labors was to defeat the Nemean Lion. In the town of Nemea, there was an invincible lion that brought devastation and fear to the town. Hercules was ordered to slay the lion and bring back his skin. Hercules was able to use his brute strength and clever bravery to choke the lion to death and bring the skin to Eurystheus.


The second coin is the only Severus Alexander I bought this year.

Thomas, I'm sorry to hear of your medical diagnosis but glad you are sharing it with us. I've never embraced a specific religion so I won't pretend to pray for you, but I would like to share my own experience with stage 4 cancer with the hope it provides some inspiration for you. Don't accept your diagnosis as a death sentence & never give up hope that you will win this battle. Seven years ago I was diagnosed with with stage 4 cancer after going through many tests & a surgical biopsy. My PC physician suggested I see two specialists about various treatments. I was shocked with the diagnosis & began preparing for the worst. I made & paid for my funeral expenses in advance & even wrote my own obituary . After a conference with the three doctors, a plan of treatments was offered to me that included chemo-therapy for 8 months, radiation therapy for 6 months that was grueling & painful, followed by an unusual surgical procedure that involved 3 doctors. My medical insurance wouldn't cover even a tiny fraction of the cost for this plan, so my PC physician said start the plan anyway & apply for financial assistance. I went through the entire plan faithfully & kept this experience a secret from my remaining family & close friends. The staff at the Unity Medical Center gave me the certificate below before the final surgical procedure.

When the surgical procedure was complete along with the recovery period, my insurance company sent me a shocking bill that covered everything . Much to my delight, the University of Rochester paid for everything ! Earlier this year the 3 doctors declared me cancer free . So never give up hope .

Stay strong. I know this is devastating. I hope you have looked into every possible avenue. There are a lot of new treatments out there.

 

I am sending heartfelt and positive thoughts, but words fail me, and so I leave those up to Marcus Aurelius:

Do not give up hope yet! Adjust your mind!
Take more vitamins, do some outdoor activities if you have a chance when the weather is less cooler!

That being said, we should make it a habit to get our CAT Scans every few years.......

Artabanos had been king of the Parthian vassal state of Adiabene and was invited in by some discontented nobles to overthrow the unpopular Vonones. Artabanos was initially defeated, and forced to seek refuge with the semi-nomadic Dahae beyond the Caspian Sea; Vonones even issued coinage proclaiming his defeat of Artabanos. But Artabanos raised a new force, tried again, successfully expelled Vonones, and went on to reign for over 20 more years. He was a fierce warrior who never gave up. On this coin he receives the palm branch from Nike.
